Originally one image, the photograph has been cut into two smaller images, the first featuring Julia with baby Ellie on her lap, and the second of Louis Friedrich Wurm. The two pieces of the photograph have been stuck onto a piece of card, the back of which features what is possibly the only known pictorial record of John Howell book shop at No. 4 Rundle Street. Thomas Taylor arrived in South Australia in October 1838 on board the ship the "Pestonjee Bomanjee". Pastoralist, farmer; Pooginook station, Avenue Range and Tatiara stations, Morphett Vale.


Captain Thomas Lipson
Watercolour portrait of Captain Thomas Lipson, first collector of customs, naval officer and harbor master of South Australia. This has been mounted in the centre of a board, with an anchor and flag motif (centre top), and a biographical timeline for Lipson on either side of the portrait.


Captain Charles Sturt
Pencil sketch on paper portraying Captain Charles Sturt. Montefiore was a friend of Sturt and made an original sketch in 1849. It is believed this artwork is a copy of that original sketch, which was used in an obituary to commemorate Sturt, after his death in 1869.


George French Angas
[General description] Portrait of George French Angas, explorer, naturalist and artist who painted some of the Colony's earliest scenes, arriving in Adelaide in 1844. He was the eldest son of George Fife Angas. Thomas Henry Brooker
[General description] This head and shoulders portrait is in 15/16ths view and shows a short-haired and bearded Mr. Brooker in middle age. Nicknamed "Honest Tom" by his colleagues he was an advocate for the interests of the poor and working people. [On back of photograph] 'Portrait of Thomas Henry Brooker, (Cabinet Minister). Boyle Travers Finniss
[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Boyle Travers Finniss. He wears a jacket and waistcoat, a narrow bow tie and long mutton-chop whiskers. See B 5833 for another later portrait and some info.


Captain Matthew Flinders
Captain Matthew Flinders. Portrait painted by Antoine Toussaint de Chazal (1770-1854) during Flinder's captivity in Ile de France in 1808. Ile de France (now Mauritius) was the home of planter de Chazal. He was an amateur painter and is known for his portrait of Royal Navy captain Matthew Flinders, painted in 1806-07


Robert Fotheringham
[General description] This is a sepia portrait of Robert Fotheringham in an oval frame. Robert and Thomas Fotheringham took over the family brewery along with their brother James. James and his brother Alexander arrived in the colony in 1838 and participated in the special survey of Gawler area by Light Finiss and Co. Their father David operated a whiskey distillery in Cambus Scotland. Along with brothers George and David, breweries were established by the brothers in Gawler, Kapunda and South Africa.

Colonel George Gawler
[General description] This upper body portrait shows the uniformed George Gawler standing, holding a sheaf of papers. He was South Australia's second Governor from 1838-41. Christopher Giles
[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Christopher Giles senior. He has a trim beard and moustache and wears a jacket and cravat with pin. He arrived in the colony in 1849 with substantial assets and took up a run at Ketchowla (in the state's north east) with Mr. H. Boucaut. The enterprise eventually failed due to severe drought and he moved to Adelaide in 1864. His son Christopher junior, trained as a surveyor, was associated with the Goyder Expedition and the Overland Telegraph.
