South Australian Company: John Stephens

South Australian Company: John Stephens

Portrait said to be of Samuel Stephens, Manager in Adelaide, 1836-1837. This is incorrect, as the portrait is actually of his brother John, newspaper proprietor, circa late 1830s, of the SA Register (died 1850). See image at B 5942. The collection of Managers and officials was possibly compiled ca.1930, when it was presumed this portrait was of Samuel Stephens. The newspaper in the painting is the Christian Advocate which John Stephens founded in London in 1832.
