Hawkes Family photograph album
Album of the Hawkes Family, possibly containing photographs of Hawkes, Stebbing and Whittington families, and English relatives and siblings of Henry Hawkes and Francis William Hawkes, who married Mary Jane Whittington. The donor, Clifford Henry Hawkes, born 1898, indicated that the album belonged to his grandfather, Henry Hawkes. The album includes a one page family tree of Clifford Hawkes, compiled by the State Library, photographs of the original album (which has not been retained), several in memoriam cards (photos 56-59), and two Children's League certificates, belonging to Clifford Hawkes and Harold Hawkes. Most photographs are un-captioned, and a small selection have been digitised. The album is an interesting source of examples of carte-de visite and cabinet print portrait photography, along with one tintype photograph, by studios in Adelaide in the nineteenth century. John Warren of Springfield, Williamstown
John Warren, son of pioneer John Warren of Springfield at Williamstown, who arrived in Adelaide in January 1838 on the ship 'Royal Admiral'. Portrait presented to John Warren as part of a testimonial on 4 November 1912.


Don Bradman

Edward John Eyre
Edward John Eyre, from a drawing by Witkin. Original drawing part of Parliament House collection, Adelaide (1949). The drawing was presented to the South Australian Government in 1948 by Lt. Col ARG Gordon (Ireland), a grandson of Edward John Eyre. Eyre went on two expeditions to the Flinders Ranges and west to beyond Ceduna. Later he was the first European to traverse the coastline of the Great Australian Bight towards Albany in Western Australia. He travelled with his Aboriginal companion Wylie


Artwork for theatre posters
Posters and program design artwork for Dutkiewicz Studio Players performances of 'The Unquiet Spirit' (1959), 'The Lower Depths' (1960), 'The Master Builder' (1960), 'All My Sons' (1961), 'The Dream of Peter Mann' (1962), 'The Father' (1962) and 'The Wild Duck' (1967). Ludwik Dutkiewicz assisted his brother with these posters. 'The Master Builder' poster is a circular photo montage using the portraits of the actors in the production and may have been displayed during the season of this play. The printed poster for 'The Wild Duck' featured a felt pen drawing by Wlad Dutkiewicz. Program designs for these plays were by Ludwik ('The Master Builder', 'All My Sons', & 'The Father') and Wlad ('The Lower Depths', 'The Dream of Peter Mann' and 'The Wild Duck').

Pencil sketch portraits on envelope of three passengers, all named, on the 'Caesar Godeffroy', done by artist (Reichardt?) during its voyage to Port Philip during 1879. The passengers are Jante Benohr, Biesterfolsrt(?) and Elling(?).

Jetty at Port Noarlunga
Watercolour depiction of the jetty at Port Noarlunga. Signed 'J.H.A' in the left bottom corner, with the date '1855' in the bottom right corner, the painting is finely detailed and contains a wealth of information. The jetty extends from an escarpment, on top of which is a man with a horse and wagon; on the jetty itself are four men, a dog and a number of parcels and bundles at the end. Beyond the jetty is a ship at anchor (the ship has been identified as the 'Yatala' by shipping historian A.D. Edwardes), with a row boat and a small boat under sail nearby; a line of rocks is shown beyond the ship and two other vessels are depicted in the far distance. In the foreground are two men launching a small boat into the waves; another man is walking towards the escarpment with two dead birds in his hand and a rifle over his shoulder, with his dog running ahead; a ladder is also lying on the ground.

Mr Ashton appears to be a rotund gentleman wearing a waistcoat around his ample girth. He supports himself on a knobbly walking stick. [On back of photograph] Aston, William Baker. About 1850. William Baker Ashton
A watercolour painting of William Baker Ashton (1800-1854), first Governor of the Adelaide Goal. He arrived in South Australia with his family in November 1838 onboard the "Rajasthan" after being granted free passage. A note on the back of the photograph says "probably sketched by H Glover - compare with B 3142"
