Judge William Alfred Wearing

[General description] Upper body portrait of the subject in three quarter view. He wears a dark jacket and contrasting waistcoat with a wing collar and bow tie. His mutton chop whiskers are neatly trimmed. He was the third judge in the Supreme Court of South Australia. He was drowned returning from Circuit duties in Palmerston in the shipwreck of the 'Gothenburg' in Torres Strait on 24 February 1875. [General description] A head and shoulders portrait of a thoughtful looking Mr. Webb. He is wearing a dark suit and wire rimmed glasses, his hair parted at the side. The present Adelaide railway station was built under his administration. [On back of photograph] 'William Alfred Webb, Railways Commissioner, Adelaide / Particulars supplied by Mr. Webb in letter XWE / 27:Born May 16, 1878. Entered railroad service in United States on Oct. 15, 1890. Until May 1912 occupied various subordinate positions. Then appointed Vice President and General Manager of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railway (4,000 miles). When the United States entered the World War was called to Washington in the administration of the railroad operations under the Government. At the close of this period in 1922 was made President of the Cambria and Indiana Railroad in Pennsylvania and relinquished this position to come to South Australia in Nov. 1922.' [General description] A portrait of Sir William Ernest George Archibald Weigall, 1874-1952, 18th Governor of South Australia. The face and upper body of the subject is shown, with folded arms. His appointment went from 9 June 1920 - 30 May 1922. He resigned after a short time in office because he became disenchanted with the manner in which Parilament handled its finances.

Dr. H. Wheeler

Portrait photograph of Dr. Henry Wheeler. He was an Honorary Physician at the London Homoeopathic Hospital, prior to being registered with the South Australian Medical Board. On 9 December 1869 he laid the Foundation Stone of the North Adelaide Baptist Church in Tynte Street. He was a deacon of the church, but returned to England with his family prior to the completion of the building. He practised with Dr. Allan Campbell (1836-1898), who was the founder of the Adelaide Children's Hospital.

Leslie Andrew Wilkie

Leslie Andrew Wilkie

Leslie A. Wilkie, Australian artist. He was born in Melbourne, 1878 and educated at Brunswick College, Victoria. He became President of SA Society of Artists in 1932 and undertook further study in Europe in 1904, later becoming Curator of the Art Gallery of SA. In 1934 he painted portraits of Aboriginals near Cooper Creek during an anthropological expedition to Central Australia. He died in Adelaide after an appendix operation in 1935.

Portrait of Algernon Theodore King Wilson, Queen's Counsel, born 7 August 1863 at Kensington SA; married to Lillian Charlotte Laurence at St. Michael's Church, Mitcham, 27 November 1895; and died at St. Peters 15 August 1925 aged 62. He was a founding member of the Philatelic Society of South Australia in 1888 and its President from 1909 to 1911. [General description] This portrait shows Dr. Woodforde seated and resting an elbow on a small table. He wears a dark suit with frock coat and a chin strap beard. He was the ship's surgeon on the 'Rapid' and upon arrival in the colony was appointed by Colonel Light as surgeon to the Survey Department at Rapid Bay. He later established a private practice in Hindley Street. He was appointed Coroner for Adelaide in 1857. [On back of photograph] 'John Woodforde, M.D. / Medical advisor to Colonel Light. He was the first person to present real weather forecasts in Australia and originated the use of names for weather systems. He is regarded by many as the 'father of modern meteorology'.

He worked in various Government departments including Marine Board, Chief Secretary's Office, Govermment Statist, Crown Lands between 1863 and 1884. He was the first Inspector of the State Bank, Mayor of Henley and Grange and was an earnest church worker. He was married and had seven children

He was a pioneering grazier in the mid north of South Australia who, together with his brothers John and Sidney made a journey up to northern Queensland to open up new grazing country, enduring much hardship. He ended his career as the Town Clerk at Jamestown. In the 1860s, with his brother Oliver, he founded the Adelaide Educational Institution which grew into the largest private independent school in South Australia.
