Eliza Margaret Hutton Lewis
One of two Lewis family overpainted opalotype photographic portraits. Originally believed to be Martha Ann Lewis (nee Brook), first wife of John Lewis, 1844-1923, but confirmed as John's mother Eliza Margaret Hutton Bristow. Eliza married James Lewis of Richmond, South Australia who is pictured in the opalotype at PRG 247/27/2. Both opalotypes have the annotation 'Brown 79' in the top left hand corner, indicating the creator and date of creation

An inscription on the back reads 'To my dear Parents S.G. - Walter Havelock Gilbert & Rosamunde Delilah Gilbert' - this was obviously sent by Sarah Gilbert from South Australia to her parents in Somerset. Premises of Packard, and Goodchild, Duff and Co. at Kooringa
A carte de visite, circa 1880, mounted on the printed card of The Northern Gem Photographic Co., W.C. Dunden, Manager. This photograph features the facade of the offices of Packard, Solicitor, together with Goodchild, Duff and Co., Auctioneers, with the staff and passerbys standing out the front. According to the Burra History Group, this photograph was taken in Market Square, Kooringa, Burra c.1881. The summaries below from the Burra Record have assisted in identifying the location. In 2014 the Burra pharmacy is located on this site. Burra Record 8 October 1880, Page 2 D.S. Packard, solicitor, has moved from the south side of Market Square to offices between Drew & Co.'s store and the Record office. Mr J.F. Duff, the representative of Goodchild, Austin & Co., has moved from his old office to the one next door to Mr Packard's. Burra Record 4 November 1881, Page 2 Advt. The Northern Gem Photographic Co. have erected their studio in Henderson's Machine Yards, Kooringa. Instantaneous Gem Portraits 5/- per dozen, finished and delivered in 15 minutes. A studio photograph (carte de visite albumen print) of a boy posing with a cricket bat and ball, dating to the late 1860s. There is no studio imprint, but the painted backdrop is identical to that of William Bentley's Moonta studio (see p.33 in 'A century in focus : South Australian photography 1840s-1940s', edited by Julie Robinson and Maria Zagala, Adelaide : Art Gallery of South Australia, 2007).

A woman with a child on her lap. A contemporary inscription on the back reads 'Mrs Thomas Gilbert and their son Walter Havelock Gilbert to her father and Mother'. A later hand identifies her as 'Sarah Gilbert nee White born Yarlington, Somerset 1842' and goes on to to list her subsequent children and their dates of birth. See also B 72996 and B 72998.
