He was 4th Premier of South Australia from 30 September 1857 to 9th May 1860 and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia from 20 November 1861 to 4 March 1876. He was knighted by Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle in July 1869. He served a short term as acting Governor from November 1872 to April 1873.

He was Advocate General to the colony of South Australia in in 1851, later Attorney General, then Premier in 1857. Upon leaving parliament in 1861 he became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He was knighted in 1869 by Queen Victoria whilst visiting England.

Born Eliza Oliver, she married William Harcus, Congregational Minister, in Newport, England, in 1848. They emmigrated to Australia and arrived in Adelaide in the early 1860s. Widowed for many years she died in March 1902. [On back of photograph] 'Mrs E. Harcus / 1901 / Mrs. Harcus, and later her daughter, Mrs. Kelsey, was principal of a fashionable ladies' school in Adelaide'.

One of the three Hawker brothers, James Collins Hawker first came out to Australia aboard the Pestonjee Bomanjee on the 12th October, 1838, a fellow passenger of Governor Gawler. He was a surveyor, explorer, prospector and grazier and co-founder of Bungaree Station.

[General description] Portrait of Edward Henty dressed in evening dress and showing his mutton-chops side whiskers and his wavy hair. [On back of photograph] Edward Henty, settled near Mt. Gambier in the early 1840's. Born in Sussex in 1809. Came to Van Diemen's Land in 1831 with his father. Arrived at Portland, Nov. 1834. Died Aug. 14/1878. An extract from the Border Watch newspaper dated June 27th 1919 is glued onto the back of the photograph and gives more information. It is entitled "President Millhouse on the Henty's".

He was particularly recognised for his watercolours of the Australian bush. He was appointed O.B.E. in 1945 for service as trustee of the Hobart National Gallery and Knight Bachelor in 1959 for services to art. [On back of photograph] 'Hans Heysen, Ambleside, June 1922 / Accompanying letter, dated 9-1-1927, contained the following information: Born Oct. 8,1877 at Hamburg / Came to South Australia when 6 years old / studied in Paris, London, and Florence 1899-1903. / Married Miss Selma Bartels in 1904 (eight children born up to 1927) / Settled at Ambleside in 1908'.

Sir John Hindmarsh

Governor Hindmarsh, first Governor of South Australia. This three quarter length portrait shows him standing with his hand resting on his hat which sits on a small table. This uniform is probably that of a Rear-Admiral. His short term as Governor in South Australia was somewhat turbulent and he was recalled to England in June 1838, later to became Governor of Heligoland. He was knighted in August 1851 and promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral in 1856 on his retirement.
