Letters written by Eric Walker

Three letters written by Eric Walker (aka Thomas Walker) whilst on active service. The first letter, dated 20 December 1914, was written from a camp near Cairo; the second, dated 16 March 1915 was sent from Heliopolis, Greece; whilst the final letter, written on one side of a piece of cardboard salvaged from some packaging was dated 28 July 1915. On the verso of this final letter is the recipient's name and address (Mr A Carrol [?] / Bagot St / Hilton / S Aus), together with various postal markings. The latter include 'On Active Service / No Stamps Available', the 'Passed By' censor's red stamp, the black ink circular postmark of the '4th. AUST. INF BGDE [??]-VII-15 FIELD P.O.'. [This field post office operated at Gallipoli from 25 April until September 1915, when it relocated to Mudros on the nearby island of Lemnos; it returned to Gallipoli from early November to mid-December 1915.]

Daughter of Joseph Williams Kitto (1842-1931) and Mary Cavanagh (1852-1894).

Some of these were taken by Hal and Sadie Pritchard, and include scenes and people taken at Hallett Cove, Adelaide City, and Port Lincoln. Some photographs show scenes of everyday life and work, including office spaces, the beach and a number of high schools in the Adelaide Metroplitan area. Also includes photographs of the Sea of Hands Festival, tombstones at West Terrace cemetery, some postcards and a menu from the R.M.S. "Ormuz". The diary covers the voyage undertaken by Samuel Marshall, leaving from London, November 1838 aboard the 'Thomas Harrison', and arriving in Port Adelaide, February 1839.

Banner of the Australasian Society of Engineers used in street processions. In 1912, the union determined that their organisation needed their own, distinctive, banner, with this decision reported in Adelaide's 'Daily Herald', 4 April 1912: 'The Australasian Society of Engineers has decided to have a new banner for the next eight hours procession. At last night's meeting of the society it was resolved that a gold medal should be offered for the best style of banner. The secretary is now prepared to accept and design from those wishing to enter into the competition.3 The banner selected was made in 1912 by the artist and later signwriter, Christoper William McLennan (1874-1933), who lived and worked in the Port Adelaide and Semaphore area.

Underneath the company's name on the wall reads 'Standardised motor body works'. The building sits on either city acre 561 or 606. A researcher has suggested that this image was taken on 13 September 1919, and that the building is located on the the former premises of F.T. Hack & Co. Body Works which was erected in 1913, purchased by Holden Motor Body Builders in 1917, and pulled down when the Holden Motor Body Builders four storey building was extended.
