Outside view of the Port Admiral Hotel, located at 55 Commercial Road, on the corner of St. Vincent Street and Commercial Road, Port Adelaide. A sign on the verandah of the hotel advertises it as the oldest building in the Port, established in 1849 [as the Railway Hotel.] The hotel was permanently closed at the time this photograph was taken. The sign boards on the foot path advertise a Greek Restaurant [Argo Cafe Restaurant] and a hairdresser called 'Hair I Am.' This part of the building is facing Commercial Road. The red brick building to the left is occupied by the Carmine and Co. Italian Restaurant and the Port Pizza Bar.

Outside view of the Port Admiral Hotel, located at 55 Commercial Road, on the corner of St. Vincent Street and Commercial Road, Port Adelaide. Renovation work is taking place on the building, the verandah has been removed and cyclone fencing has been put up. Signs on the fencing provide historical background to the hotel. The middle banner advertises a weekend Vintage Festival on Lipson Street. This part of the building faces the intersection of the two roads, with Commercial Road to the left of the photo. The building to the right of the hotel was once occupied by William Russell Pty. Ltd., sailmaker and ship chandler, but appears to now be used for office spaces.

[General description] This view shows the Customs House on Commercial Road, Port Adelaide, the third Customs building on this site. It was built in 1877-79 in the Victorian Italianate style, next to the earlier Institute building (1874-76). Originally the two buildings were separated by a laneway but they were later joined together. Note the large covered dray at the kerbside, which according to a researcher may be a railway wagon that went on railway lines from the old Port Dock Station in St. Vincent Street around to the wharf area. [On front of photograph] 'Ellen Street, Port Pirie, looking north / 1876' [General description] A number of men and boys are posing for the photographer on the road in front of the Port Pirie Hotel and Wood and Oliver's general store, with its clutter of merchandise. In the centre are two mounted men, probably officials, sitting very upright. A six horse team with a laden wagon stands on the left, and on the right railway men pose with their stationary locomotive. On the extreme right, next to the railway line, a pile of sacks are stacked in front of what appear to be warehouses in the background. Samuel Wills is the first licensee of the Port Pirie Hotel, established in 1873.

A dray carrying bales, some horse drawn carts and a man pushing a hand barrow are seen in the street which has a cobblestone crossing for pedestrians. The inscription reads: "To the memory of Alexander Drysdale Tassie, Merchant, and first settler in Port Augusta, who died January 26th, 1875, aged 40 years. This tribute of reaspect is erected by some of his friends as a mark of esteem, and in recognition of his many good qualities during a residence of nearly 20 years in this township". Back: Mr. R.A. Francis (Coach). Middle row: Fred Wormleighton (Bow), Haydn Phillips (2), Jack Lock (3), Ron Bruton (Stroke). Front: Charlie Davis (Cox). They rowed in the boat WR Lock, a Tub Four built by Harold Lounder of Adelaide and launched on Opening Day 1939. The boat had an outstanding run of success from the time it was launched and crewed by Bruton, Lock, Phillips, Wormleighton and Davis. They were never beaten as a crew. [General description] Shipping of all kinds is seen in this panoramic view over the Port River and wharves. In the centre a large steamer is moored at the Howard Smith Company wharf. Jonas' Prince's Hotel (established 1851) is the two storey building in the foreground. Robert Jonas is the last licensee of this hotel which lost its licence in the Temperance Party's 1909 push to restrict the number of licensed premises in Port Adelaide. It was one of fifteen hotels whose licenses expired on 25 March 1909 and were not renewed. See B 5654 for an earlier view of this hotel. Shipping at Queen's Wharf, Port Adelaide. Second vessel from the right is the "Port Pirie". See also B 12188. "Port Pirie" is a steel screw steamer built in 1886 in Newcastle on Tyne. She made her maiden voyage from London to Sydney carrying immigrants.
