'Symmetry', Port Adelaide

The ship is flying the Red Ensign and sitting quietly at her mooring. The artist, Alexander Charles Kelly (1811-1877) was a newly arrived Scottish medical practitioner and winegrower.

Levi's Wharf, Port Adelaide

Levi's Wharf, Port Adelaide built in 1854 opposite McLaren Wharf. It was built in the old style with main piles and sheet piles to the front, filled with silt, sand, stones and clay. At low tide ships at the wharf lay on the mud. The ships could not be unloaded until high tide. In 1866-67 there were two warehouses on the wharf.

Copy of original description "view of the 300 feet of wharf constructed on the new plan with double front, which has enabled us to break up the limestone crust and excavate to a depth of 18 feet at the lowest tides, an operation which has been continued 100 feet beyond the point at which we left off wharf making. The site of this wharf is shown in a small photo taken before the work was commenced. It is there occupied by some barges, boats etc, laying aground. Compare with B 5646 taken in 1865."

[General description] 'Lady Daly' paddlesteamer at the Port Adelaide wharf. Passengers and crew line the decks and flags fly from the vessel's masts. City buildings can be seen in the background. A sternwheeler, she was built by Jackson and Murray circa 1861 and served successfully until 1878 when she was converted into a log barge. [On back of photograph] "Lady Daly' / name on top of wheelhouse / 1860-1865 ; Building on left is Wharf Hotel, licensee W.J. Gates 1860, 1861-1865'.

[General description] The Ophir at Pt. Adelaide during the Duke of York's visit in 1901. The Ophir was a twin-screw ocean liner of the Orient Steam Navigation Company of London. In 1901, as Royal Yacht HMS Ophir she was chartered to convey the Duke and Duchess of York to Australia.

North Parade, between Commercial Road and Mildred Street, Port Adelaide. On the left is Simpson's coal office and in the centre is the Post Office. Premises on the right were erected in 1856 and contain the business of Edwin Sawtell, the first optician and watchmaker in South Australia.

Ship City of Singapore, after an explosion at Port Adelaide. Three firemen were killed during the explosion which blew pieces of the ship into the nearby wharf shed, through the wharf and blasted the road surface. The ship was carrying benzine, petrol, kerosene, grain and flour.

The" Governor Musgrave ", Port Adelaide. The iron screw steamer was built in Mort's Dock, Balmain New South Wales in 1874. It was used as a lighthouse tender until 1914 when it was transferred to the Commonwealth Government.

View of Port Adelaide showing H. M. S. "Protector ". The ship changed in 1900 from "Protector" to MNCS "Protector". Another note on the back of the photograph states "HMCS Protector until 1900, HMS Protector during 1900 Boxer Rebellion, HMAS Protector after Federation. This ship was a large flat-iron gunboat commissioned and purchased by the South Australian government in 1884, for the purpose of defending the local coastline against possible attacks in the aftermath of the "Russian scare" of the 1870s.
