Hog Bay Jetty, Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island
[General description] This view of Hog Bay shows the Karatta, moored at the end of the Hog Bay jetty. Passengers are already boarding. The Karatta was Kangaroo Island's lifeline, being the main passenger and freight vessel plying between Port Adelaide and KIngscote from 1907 until 1961. The ship was captained by Captain Pearson. Marino Lighthouse
Marino Lighthouse with Seacliff and Brighton in the distance. August 11, 1962. This lighthouse was established in 1962 and supersedes Wonga Shoal beacon erected on the ruins of the old Port Adelaide Lighthouse which was knocked down by the sailing ship "Dimsdale" on November 17, 1912, drowning the two light keepers. The navaid shows 2 flashes every 15 seconds with an intensity of 1,000 candles having a range of 42 km, the tower is 15 metres high and 128 metres above sea level.

[General description] Horse teams harnessed to loaded wool wagons are lined up for the photographer in front of the wool stores at Milang. Willington'.

River steamer "Tyro" and barge "Victor" at Murray Bridge. Tyro " operated from 1872 until 1926. She shuttled between Murray Bridge and Mannum from 1884-1917. She was largely destroyed by a boiler explosion in 1897. The Captain and engineer was badly scalded. Victor was 93 feet long, had 14 foot beam, draft 5 foot and was built at Port Adelaide in 1867.

The "Avoca" and the "Murrundi" (formerly the Menindie), at Goolwa. The Avoca was built at Milang in 1877 and was Australia's second oldest paddle boat. It was used for transporting grain from Goolwa to Port Adelaide and was 112 feet long. Captain D Treacy was the captain for some time.

[General description] Side view of 'P.S. Lady Daly' raising 'S.W. Settler', at Settlers Bend, near Renmark. Both are sternwheelers. The "Settler' owned by P.W. Jackson and Alexander Murray, was built at Fletcher's Slip at Port Adelaide. At 167 feet long including the wheel, she proved far too long to negotiate the many twists of the upper river. After just one season she was taken off the rivers. The 'Lady Daly' built by the same owners was 112 feet plus wheel and served with success until the 1890s [On back of photograph] 'The date of the picture is stated to be 1862 / Information supplied by H. Murray River Steamers
River steamers Decoy and Murrumbidgee, with barges Moorara, Empress and Mallara carrying the largest consignment of dried fruit (500 tons) ever carried on the river system. All vessels were at this time owned by Murray Shipping Ltd. Several events, including the disruption to trade caused by drought and World War I induced several large River Murray shipowners to combine their resources into one company: Murray Shipping Ltd. was formed in 1919 and included the fleet of Permewan, Wright and Co. Ltd. and AH Landseer Ltd of Milang and Knox and Downs of Wilcannia. Irrigation was established on the River Murray in the late 19th century; bust and boom years followed as droughts, heatwaves and severe frosts played havoc in the orchards. The tenacity of the pioneers, the development of more appropriate crops and frost protection techniques saw the Murray Valley eventually become established as a major fruit-growing region. Much of the land was developed after the First and Second World Wars with the Soldier Settlement Schemes opening up new tracts of land to irrigation. Dried fruit was a staple for many years and the river boats carried it downstream: a railway at Morgan connected the river trade with Port Adelaide and overseas shipping and there were railway lines to Loxton, Paringa and Waikerie by 1914.

Lighthouse Keeper Cottages
Lighthouse Keeper cottages at Neptune Island, 1 November 1907. The Neptune Islands consist of two groups of islands located close to the entrance of Spencer Gulf. Lighthouse Island is among the islands of the South Neptune Islands. The keeper's cottage is a large stone single storey building with a steeply pitched tiled roof. A group of workmen are having a break from their building to pose for this photograph. The roof is almost completed. In 1901 the light tower from the Port Adelaide entrance was relocated to the South Island Island. The complex consisted of the cottage, store, outbuildings, stone fences and stone rainwater tanks.

South Neptune Island Lighthouse. In 1901 the light tower from the Port Adelaide Entrance was relocated to South Neptune Island. The low elevation of the islands was a hazard to shipping causing several shipwrecks. The major casualty was the "Yandra" which was serving as the lighthouse supply ship at the time of her loss in dense fog.

Sketch of proposed Semaphore Institute. Semaphore Institute was formed on December 15, 1881. It later amalgamated with Port Adelaide Institute in 1903. This documents shows the proposed architectural plan and description of the building and is dated March 20, 1883. The Institute building was opened by the Governor March 15, 1884

Semaphore
Semaphore signalling station was established in 1856 for officers to record details of all vessels in Gulf St Vincent. It was also used to record information on water depth, tides and cargo loading. The Time Ball Tower was erected in 1875 next to the Signal Station. The very tall flag pole was erected by the publican of the White Horse Cellars Hotel at Port Adelaide so that he could alert his hotel of the approach of ships in the area thus earning the name of Semaphore for the district.

"The Wollomai" leaving the jetty at Streaky Bay. This schooner was built in Yarra Bank in Victoria in 1876. She made five voyages to Port Adelaide between 1893 - 1910. She was eventually wrecked about two miles south of Apollo Bay in Victoria in 1923

View of the 'Cheopis' loading/unloading boxes at the Cape Jervis jetty, with Kangaroo Island in the distance. An article in the 'Advertiser' on Saturday, 13th April, 1935 mentions a small steamship 'Cheopis', "which trades daily between Kangaroo Island and the mainland". In 1934 the ship was registered at Port Adelaide by Kangaroo Island Transport Co. Ltd and intended for a service between Cape Jervis and Kangaroo Island, where it remained in service until approximately 1946.

Kitchen in the restored Rumblelow Cottage, Victor Harbor. The Rumbelow family arrived in Port Adelaide in 1854 aboard the "Bomanjee". The family started a long relationship with fishing and the boating life and became one of the chief institutions of Encounter Bay. The Rumbelow family residence in Franklin Parade was called "Yilki".

[General description] Family members pose at the entrance of 'The Brocas', originally a cottage built circa 1850 by Henry Giles. In 1853 it was bought by well-known Port Adelaide merchant and shipping agent John Newman. This view shows the original cottage is now a mansion being extensively enlarged c. 1870 with the addition of front rooms (ground floor with bay windows), entrance hall and a tower reputedly to the design of architect T. English. Mr Newman, being an old Etonian named his house for Eton's Brocas Meadows. Space in front of the house has been left for an extension to the upstairs balcony which was added in 1873. Presbyterian Church at Woodville. The Woodville Wesleyan Mission was organised in 1876 as part of the Port Adelaide Circuit. Local landowner Captain Henry Simpson donated a portion of his land on Woodville Road so that a church could be built. In 1883 the original iron church was replaced by one built of stone. The foundation stone was laid by Mrs W Crocks in 1883. The church was enlarged in 1903 and included transepts, vestries and could seat 500
