Wonga Shoal Lighthouse
[General description] Wonga Shoal Lighthouse was commissioned in July 1901 to guide vessels safely toward Port Adelaide and was situated about three kilometers from the end of Semaphore Jetty. In this view a dinghy is at the ready on the small dock adjoining the Lighthouse. On 17 November 1912 lightkeepers Henry Franson and Charles McGowan were killed when the lighthouse was struck by the 'Dimsdale'. [On back of photograph] 'Wonga Shoal Lighthouse off the Semaphore / Struck and destroyed by the ship 'Dimsdale' on November 17th, 1912'.

Douglas Bruce
Douglas Bruce, formerly of H.M.C. Port Adelaide, arrived in South Australia on the "William Nichol" from Greenock via Dublin with Captain Elder on 27 June 1840. He worked for his brother Robert Bruce at his station "Wallelberdina" on the eastern shore of Lake Torrens. They had 25,000 sheep. Douglas died after a fall from a horse in 1873.

John and Frances Anne Buick
John Buick arrived in Port Adelaide onboard the "Malcolm" in 1844. He lived for 58 continuous years on Kangaroo Island with his wife Frances Anne Ladd Buick, nee Filmer, who arrived in South Australia onboard "Lloyds" in 1838. They built a brush house, later a wooden structure and then a brick house for their family of 16 children. As a shipwright John Buick was commissioned to build a cutter of 36 tons which was named "Kangaroo".

Clifton R. Churchward
Clifton R. Churchward was born in South Australia in 1883. He joined the Port Adelaide office of the Commonwealth Customs where he was chief analyst for 37 years. After retirement he fostered an interest in the South African government when their currency changed to decimalisation. He died in 1962

Edward Allan Farquhar
Edward Allan Farquhar. Born Le Fevre's Peninsular 4 November 1871 and educated at Mr. S. MacPherson's School, Exeter, and Prince Alfred College. Married Mabel Cranwell in 1896. Began his career working for Crooks and Brooker in 1885. President of the Marine Board until the establishment of the Harbors Board in 1914, when he was appointed Commissioner of the Harbors Board becoming Chairman on the resignation of his predecessor, Arthur Searcy, in 1924. Served as a Councillor, Alderman and Chair of Finance on the Port Adelaide City Council. He died on 3 April 1935.

Thomas Stephen Filmer arrived in South Australia with his family on board "Lloyds" which left London in August 1838 and arrived Port Adelaide December 1838. The Filmer family consisted of Stephen (45)and his wife (Frances (42). They had nine children with them. Thomas Stephen was aged 14 and listed as a farmer. Thomas Stephen Filmer married Anne Irene (nee Rigby) in 1846 aged 22. They had five children. Thomas died July 1,1906 aged 82 and was buried at Saint Jude's Cemetery at Brighton, South Australia

Plumber etc., father of James Gray, Baptist Minister etc., Mitcham. Arrived Port Adelaide in the "Sea Queen" with his family on October 27, 1855 and joined up with his brother George at part Lot 40, Sydenham Road, Norwood (Gray Street)". William was born in Brentford, United Kingdom in 1891. He died in college Park in 1881 aged 61 years. His parents were George Gray and Mary Gray and he was married three times. His occupation was iron and tin monger and plumber

George Hall
George Hall M.L.C acted as Harbour Master to Thomas Lipson from 1840-1841. He started a business salt-curing beef. Worked on a cattle property near Angaston, then set up a shipping business in Port Adelaide. He was a committee member of SA Railway Company, Chamber of Commerce, Burra Burra Mine. He was a founder of SA Gas Company. He was elected to the Legislative Council and owned the property of Woodside House. The photograph is copied from glass portrait donated by Miss Alice E Hall of Frome House, North Terrace.

Captain John Hart, pioneer and Cabinet Minister, 1869-73. Premier 1865-66, 1868, 1870-71. He started his seafaring career at the age of 12 when he went to sea and visited Van Diemen's Land. After many voyages he managed a whaling station at Encounter Bay. He eventually gave up the sea in 1846 and settled near Port Adelaide where along with partner H Kent Hughes he established flour mills. He was interested in copper mining and later public affairs

A photograph of Captain George Rickenson S. Pickhills sitting with Captain John Wallace, standing. [On back of photograph] no information. Captain Pickhills arrived in Bourke on the "Gemini" with Captain Randall in 1861, but as late as 1908 he was interviewed by CW Bean. At the time he was Inspector of Marine Crafts at the Port of Bourke. About 1896 he was Captain of the "Sturt". He died 13th August 1912 at Bourke.

[General description] This is a new 700 class Mikado type locomotive. The two men at the cab window are possibly the engineer and fireman. This locomotive was part of an order of thirty placed by South Australian Railways (S.A.R.) with Armstrong Whitworth in Great Britain in 1924, which arrived in two shipments in 1926. These massive locomotives were unloaded at Port Adelaide and taken off the pier by horse teams. [On back of photograph] 'Mikado type of locomotive'.
