He is wearing a shako style cap and spurs. Members of Adelaide Rifles outside the Mounted Police Barracks. The Adelaide Rifle Company was established in 1840 with headquarters in King William Street. Initially 77 volunteers enlisted and were organised into two cavalry troops and one company of infantry. At the time of this photograph an Act established a permanent force supplemented by experienced volunteers. 1000 men were raised and officers and drill instructors were obtained from England for purposes of instruction, discipline and organisation.
