Summary

[General description] This photograph appeared in the Advertiser with the heading 'The passing of the horse' The caption underneath read: 'Black Maria to be sold: The police horse-patrol wagon, known as Black Maria, has been replaced by a modern motor vehicle, and is to be disposed of by auction' The vehicle is shown with a uniformed policeman sitting on a seat at its rear. He is wearing a shako style cap and spurs. [On back of photograph' 'Horse-drawn prison van known as the Black Maria, used until 1928 for conveying prisoners betwen the Supreme Court and the gaols at Adelaide and Yatala / May 1928 / reproduced in Advertiser, May 23, 1928'.
