"Sunnyside", Beaumont

"Sunnyside", Beaumont - Former residence of Sir Wm. Milne. Lady Eliza Milne (1818-1912) was married to Sir William Milne (1822-1895) Eliza and her family arrived in South Australia onboard the "Palmyra" and settled near Nairne. William Milne was a member of both Upper and Lower Houses as well as a wine and spirits dealer. He was President and member of several committees. Eliza and William had four sons and five daughters and lived at "Sunnyside" at Glen Osmond. Sunnyside was set among extensive gardens and is an impressive symmetrical bluestone house with square bay windows at either end and a central gabled verandah over the entrance. The original house was built on a 40 acre estate in the 1840s but was considerably enlarged by Sir William Milne after he purchased it in 1850

St. James' School, Blakiston

St. James' School, Blakiston

St. James' School, Blakiston, on the south side of the main road between Littlehampton and Nairne . "Erected opposite the Church in the glebe paddock in 1848" : (Church News, 7 May 1897, page 1). The school was originally a day school, and a Sunday School in 1933. Rumour has it that the old school house was demolished by rampaging cattle some time in the mid 20th century.

John Dunn's Mill, Bridgewater. John Dunn owned a mill in Devon before he immigrated with his wife and four children to South Australia. On arrival he bought land near Nairne and built a windmill for grinding flour. He established many mills including the Bridgewater Mill in 1860 which operated on steam and water from Cox's Creek. The floods of 1870 washed away the newly completed mill along with the older dam and three bridges. When he died in 1894 he owned eleven mills

Ceduna

Mounted Constable Peter Lawrence Hansberry and police horse 'Ceduna'. Hansberry was the first Officer in Charge of Murat Bay (Ceduna) Police Station and stationed there from 13 February 1904 to 30 September 1907, when he was transferred to Nairne Police Station. It is said that Ceduna was named after M/C Hansberry's police horse 'Ceduna' when the town name was changed from Murat Bay to Ceduna in January 1922. Peter Hansberry was the father of the late Chief Superintendent L. Hansberry of SA Police.

[General description] One of the two railway viaducts at Eden Hills, known as the Sleeps Hill viaducts after the pioneer Samuel Sleep who owned the property. At the time they were on the Nairne line, which later became part of the Melbourne line. Built in 1882 by an American company, they were in use until 1919 when route changes made them redundant and they were dismantled in 1920. See B 11704 for a view of construction work. [General description] This steep Adelaide Hills gully is spanned by one of the two viaducts on the Adelaide-Nairne railway, designed by American bridge engineer C.S. Smith and built in 1882. [On back of photograph] 'Viaduct on the Hills Railway / In the eighteen eighties'.

Green Patch Station

Green Patch Station

Homestead, Green Patch Station. The old home was the property of the Sinclair family since it was built by Mr James Sinclair in 1853 who arrived from the Isle of Aran in Scotland on board the "Indus" in 1839. He transferred his wife, three children and 1,880 sheep overland from Nairne to Port Lincoln. He lost half of the sheep to coast disease. He first settled near Coffin Bay but later moved to Uley. Green Patch homestead had a slate roof that was later replaced with galvanised iron. Post from the wrap around verandah can be seen in the photograph which shows the two storey home positioned on a slight rise in a scrubby landscape.

Flour Mill, Hay Valley

Remains of a flour mill erected about 1840 by John Dunn, sen., approx. 4 kilometres north west of Nairne, near Hay Valley . The timber for the Mill was hauled using bullocks by Henry Kelly of Semaphore. The Mill was built entirely of wood hewn by John Dunn.

"Eurilla", the residence of Sir William Milne at Mount Lofty. Thehouse was built in 1884 as a summer residence. The name "Eurilla" is thought to have come from the Aboriginal word for Mount Lofty - Yureidla. Later the property was owned by Sir Lavington Bonython. Lady Eliza Milne (1818-1912) was married to Sir William Milne (1822-1895) Eliza and her family arrived in South Australia onboard the "Palmyra" and settled near Nairne. "Byethorne", Mount Lofty

"Byethorne", the residence of William Milne, junior at Mount Lofty. William Milne (senior) was a member of both Upper and Lower Houses as well as a wine and spirits dealer. He was President and member of several committees. Eliza and William had four sons and five daughters and lived at "Sunnyside" at Glen Osmond. William Milne junior lived at "Byethorne" and later - George Milne from 1915. It is located at Stirling in the Adelaide Hills. In 1947 it was part of St Catherine's Convent. Byethorne was also the name of his mother's parent's home near Nairne

Flour Mill, Hay Valley

John Dunn's wind-driven flour mill at Hay Valley in ruins. John Dunn arrived in South Australia in 1840 and built a windmill in 1842 for grinding flour on land purchased near his brother's property at Hay Valley (near Nairne) The windmill was possibly the first in Australia. In 1844 he built his first steam mill in Mount Barker when South Australia was the only colony in Australia producing wheat.

Ralph Wardle: Came to Australia with his parents Michael and Mary Wardle on "Sir Charles Forbes" in 1839. Parents settled at Hindmarsh Valley near Victor Harbor. Ralph married Eliza Abbott 1857 and they had 10 children. Ralph was a farmer all his life, firstly at Hindmarsh Valley, then Nairne, and later at Hawker.
