Cabinet card portrait of William Hickson Sowter (died 1912) and his wife Jane Beattie Gemmell (1853-1934). William Sowter worked as a chemist in Gawler Place, Adelaide, and later in Kadina. He married Jane Beattie Gemmell in 1881 and had two children, Ruby Charlotte (1884-1949) and Archie Gemmell Sowter (1889-1931). Handwritten caption: 'Willie Sowter, stepson of Aunt Kate [Katherine Elizabeth MacNee], eldest daughter of Dr [?] Macnee. His wife was Jane Gemmell of Strathalbyn in S.A.'
