Mundoo Barrage (Near view) In September 1914 it was suggested by Mr H Eaton from the Engineer in Chief's Department that a temporary dam be constructed to separate the salt water from the fresh water. The proposal was to decrease the quantity of salt entering the lakes. Mundoo Channel is the shortest distance between the sea and the lakes. The Mundoo Barrage and Boundary Creek Barrage adjoin Mundoo Island and the Boundary Creek Barrage and Ewe Island Barrage adjoins Ewe Island.

Steamer stuck on a mud bank opposite Hart's Island about 70 miles upstream from Morgan. A small crowd of onlookers has gathered. A researcher comments that Harts Island is still a tricky section of river to navigate, especially on a low river. Another researcher suggests that the steamer is the 'Corowa'.

The "Avoca" and the "Murrundi" (formerly the Menindie), at Goolwa. The Avoca was built at Milang in 1877 and was Australia's second oldest paddle boat. It was used for transporting grain from Goolwa to Port Adelaide and was 112 feet long. Captain D Treacy was the captain for some time.

[General description] The paddlesteamer Moolgewanke moored at the river bank with passengers and crew posing for the photographer. She appears to be carrying a cargo of wool bales. On the opposite side of the river the trees have been cut down and wood stacked in tidy piles for the steamboats [On back of photograph] 'Murray River steamer Moolgewanke / In the eighteen sixties / Original in the possession of Miss L. Paddle steamer "Gem"

Paddle steamer "Gem" was built in 1876 and shown in this photograph on the River Murray. She was used as a towing boat for other steamers. After being refitted in 1877 she carried general cargo and passengers. She sunk twice.

[General description] Popular paddle steamer 'Gem' at moorings on the Murray River. The lower deck was used for cargo (note the wool bales). The middle deck was for the passengers and the top one for the captain and crew. She was launched at Moama, New South Wales in 1876 and had a long and eventful career including two sinkings. She is now in process of restoration at Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement.

Clyde, built at Echuca, and The Australien - built at Echuca in 1897. "Clyde" was built from a barge called "Mudie". According to a researcher, the P.S. Clyde was actually built up on the hull of the "Result" barge in 1888. Engineer James Quin died after getting his clothing caught by the engine shaft in 1907. "Australien" was launched in 1897. The Chinese cook Jimmy Ah Kee drowned in 1901. She last served as a logging steamer above Yarrawonga Weir.

"PS Industry", River Steamer

"Industry", Murray river steamer : No copying without Donor's permission. This PS "Industry" was built in 1911. The Centenary Celebrations will be held in 2011 at Renmark. Please note: possible confusion as another "Industry" was was built in 1878 as a barge and converted to a steamer in 1878. She was used for snagging operations for the South Australian Government and also for delivering pile timber in 1926.

River steamers "Lancashire Lass" was built at Echuca in 1878. The "Maggie" in 1881, also at Echuca. "Maggie" was used for tourist acommodation at Waikerie in 1910. No copying without permission from the Donor.

River steamer "Mundoo"

River steamer "Mundoo". No copying without permission from the Donor. She was built at Mundoo Island in 1875. In 1876 she caught fire and sank while carrying railway iron. She was back in operation and perhaps newly enlarged by 1878. The photograph shows the "Mundoo" moored to a barge which is also moored to the banks of the River Murray. Food stuff is being loaded on to the "Mundoo" and being received by the cook who is wearing his long white apron.

River steamer "Nellie" - built in Moama in 1882. No copying without permission from the Donor. "Nellie" was originally used as a hawking vessel, later converted to a mail and passenger boat which travelled between Morgan and Murray Bridge or Morgan and Mannum. She was destroyed by fire in 1930.

River Steamer 'Marion'

[General description] River Steamer 'Marion' at mooring, built by Milang shipbuilder A.H. Landseer in 1896, first floated 1897. She had many changes to her superstructure over the years as her function changed. This photo was probably taken after Ben Chaffey of Renmark bought her (in 1908) and converted her into a passenger and cargo boat. There is a group of men in suits standing on both upper decks and there seems to be work in progress on the lower deck. The 'Marion' is still plying the River Murray today (2017) having been restored by volunteers.

River steamer "Marion" was one of the first paddle steamers to run cruises on the Murray River. She was wood fired and first floated in 1897. In 1908 she was rebuilt with accommodation for 8 passengers as well as cargo

For almost 4 months central Queensland was preoccupied with a feud between shearers striking against working conditions and wealthy squatters. Paddle Steamer "Florence Annie" operated on the Murray-Darling river system between Bourke and Adelaide in the 19th century carrying mostly wool bales

River steamer, Jupiter at Wilcannia. This paddle steamer was originally built as an iron barge which was shipped in sections from Scotland. It was used for trading on the Rivers Murray and Darling, regularly carrying bales of wool from stations such as Lake Victoria, Tapalin and Cobdogla. She also carried passengers, shearers and sometimes sheep
