Granite Island Jetty
Panoramic view of Victor Harbor from Granite Island with the jetty in the foreground. The deep sea port near Granite Island facilitated the movement of freight from the Murray to Port Adelaide. A bathing house for women was built near the causeway in 1874. The jetty was extended to Granite Island in 1875 and a working jetty was built on the island. Work on the breakwater on Granite Island was commenced in 1879 and finished in 1881. The screwpile jetty on Granite Island was used for the first time by the "Penola" in 1881. A horse drawn tram was introduced to the Causeway between Victor Harbor and Ganite Island in 1895


Cottage, Hackney
Cottage occupied by the Stevens family in Park St., Hackney. John Stevens a settler from Chichester started a business with S.L. Phillips in 1838 at Port Adelaide. It was known as the South Australian Shipping Company. Stevens traded with other colonies on the Murray with flour and grain from his windmill in Adelaide and his steam driven mill at Noarlunga. He eventually exported grain and flour to Valparaiso in Chile. The photograph shows a lady (believed to be Mrs Stevens) with a springer spaniel on the front path of a single storey cottage in Hackney.

Village Settlement, Holder
General scene at Holder. Holder was established on 13 March 1894. Holder Settlement was situated on the banks of the River Murray and existed from 1894 until the area was converted into individual holdings in 1901. The settlement had the advantage of a substantial building from a previous sheep station. The photograph shows a group of five men standing under a tree with a sign stating "Holder Dockyard". The men are building small boats. Two women are standing nearby under the awning of an iron hut

They were created to ease the economic depression following the major strikes in the 1890's and the bank crash of 1893. Socialist ideas became popular and utopian schemes were appealing to the unemployed and those struggling to make ends meet. Following pumping problems and little knowledge the settlement ceased in 1903 with the remaining leased blocks being amalgamated into the Waikerie Irrigation Area.

Angaston Institute
Angaston Institute was constructed in Murray Street in 1870. It was the first Institute in the Barossa Valley and was formed in 1856 with the building following later. The Institute served as a library, reading rooms, lecture hall, concerts and recitals venue.


Kingston Village
Lower part of Kingston village settlement. This was one of thirteen communal settlements known as village settlements. They were created to ease the economic depression following the major strikes in the 1890's and the bank crash of 1893. Socialist ideas became popular and utopian schemes were appealing to the unemployed and those struggling to make ends meet. The Kingston Settlement proceeded well for the first few years but later the residents wanted their own blocks of land and wanted to work individually. A faulty pump was their undoing and the settlement was incorporated into the Kingston Irrigation Area in 1914.


Lake Bonney
[General description] Group of Kingston villagers with members of Parliamentary Select Committee, Lake Bonney, 18 October 1895. The Committee was visiting to enquire into the working of the Village Settlements. Members were J. Moule (chairman), P.P. Gillen (Commissioner of Crown Lands), E.L. Batchelor, W.J. Blacker, T. Burgoyne, J. McLachlan and T. Price. The group stands (and sits) under some straggly gum trees on the water's edge. The two women present display the 'wasp waist' fashionable at the time. Flooding, Lameroo
Floodwaters at Lameroo, 2nd September 1908 where the annual rainfall is 15.1 inches. Lameroo is situated in the Murray Mallee near the South Australian and Victoria border. The township was established in 1896 and the railway line was built in 1906. The photograph shows a few buildings and the surrounding floodwaters.


Langhorne Creek
Timber sawing, with bullock power at Langhorne's Creek on the Potts property. Frank Potts arrived from England on the Buffalo with Governor Hindmarsh in 1836 and was thus one of the original settlers. In 1849 he built a ferry to cross the Murray at Wellington. He bought land and established the 'Traveller's Rest' to aid travellers enroute to the gold diggings. He built a bullock powered sawmill and cleared land for a vineyard. He named his property Bleasdale. Later he returned to boat building. He had previouslt built more than fifteen vessels. He was a well known local identity.

Goolwa Hotel
Goolwa Hotel, with portrait of proprietor and advertisements. The figurehead of the "Mozambique" is above the doors of Hayloft on the Stables. This advertisement for the Goolwa Hotel states the following: 'River Murray an ordinary daily at one o'clock. Choice English ales on draught. Horses guns and dogs for sportsmen. By yours respectfully Jno. Varcoe. Wines spirits and cordials. Good stables, stock yards. Horses and gigs on hire. Three photographs on the advertisement depict the Goolwa Hotel, Jno. Varcoe and the Stables.
