Transporting metal ingots at Port Pirie

A small steam locomotive being used to transport metal ingots at the Port Pirie smelting plant, South Australia. The locomotive is a small Hudswell Clarke product built in Leeds, England, in 1902 (serial number 628), latterly the Wallaroo & Moonta Mining & Smelting Company's number 10). The smelter's Welsh style rectangular chimney is still standing. [from information provided].

Letter card posted from Moonta Mines 13 November 1916, to Private Mitchell at the Cheltenham Military Camp, from his mother. Letter was written from the School House. She says she can imagine how distasteful the conditions must be in Military Camp, mentions sending a parcel to 'dear old Lance' (likely to have been Private Mervin Lance Mitchell, who served in the 9th Light Horse Regiment, 12th reinforcement) and wishes she was nearer to the camp so she could visit her son. The images include front and back of the card and the letter. No hard copy is held. See contents note for more details.

Photographs collected and taken for a conservation study of older residential buildings and hotels in Adelaide city (not North Adelaide) in 1976-1977, initiated by the Adelaide Residents' Society Inc., which were later used in their 1978 publication 'Preserving Historic Adelaide' edited by Colin Bond and Hamish Ramsay (Rigby Limited). The names of the photographers are not specified, but the following people were involved: Bob Ramsay, Michael Brock, Peter Kelly and Peter O'Grady. (Negatives of their photographs comprise series 4-6 of this group, and may include images from this series.) Some of the early views of buildings have been copied from State Library images (denoted in captions by 'SLSA'). See 'Contents' in 'More info' for details. (The City Acre number or exact location is not specified). Three images not listed in the 'Contents' but included in the book are: (98) Part of Queen Elizabeth I's proclamation of 1560 'agaynst breakyng or defacing of Monuments'; (99) Elevation drawing of St Paul's Cathedral, London by Christopher Wren; (100) Kirribilli House, Sydney.

Composite photograph made from four original photographs of the horses 'Kiwi Para' and 'Para Rip' in Kadina, 1952. 'Kiwi Para' won the Sapling Stakes, and 'Para Rip' won the Moonta Handicap. E.H. Murdoch was the owner-breeder of the two horses. The silks of the jockeys and the rooftops have been colour tinted.
