Shearers at Furner

Furner-Gillap station shearing shed. From back to front: Probably Ray Culley, overseer (standing); ? ; ? ; Bob Brooks; Compton Holloway; Bill Stafford; Jimmie Brennan. The latter four were shearers who regularly shore at Gillap. The Hornsby engine on wheels in the background was installed in 1912 and ran until 1969 when it was given to the Millicent National Trust. The shed was destroyed in the bushfires of 16 February 1983.

George Glen

George Glen seated in a wheelchair. He managed the sheep run Mayurra Station in the south east of South Australia, the site of the future town of Millicent. Millicent was named after Millicent Glen (nee Short) wife of George Glen. Samuel Davenport established Mayurra sheep run which was later managed by George Glen.

Photograph of Charlotte Emma (Trixie) McCallum (nee Heuzenroeder) taken in the studio on her wedding day at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Millicent on 16 October 1948. She married Ross Duncan McCallum in Millicent, and as Mr McCallum played the pipes, the couple were given a guard of honour by the Millicent pipe band. Charlotte was a qualified tailoress and tatted her head dress above the veil. She wore the dress on loan from a friend, Jean Marks, who lived in Tantanoola. Charlotte McCallum died in 2008.

Howard Stark, 1st Australian Imperial Force. Service number 1992, Howard Stark, was born at Millicent, South Australia, on 19 August 1897. He enlisted at Millicent on 30 March 1916 and served with the 50th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action in France on 2 April 1917.

Portrait of Master Ian James Pennell, son of Geoffrey Minett Pennell, sitting cross legged in the studio in Mount Gambier in 1945. He is five years old and is wearing a tie and tie pin with his shirt and short trousers. Ian was born in Millicent Hospital on 17 June 1940. His father Geoffrey was born in Kent, England on 18 January 1908 and immigrated to South Australia under the Barwell scheme, introduced by the then South Australian Premier Sir Henry Barwell. At age 16 Geoffrey was a passenger on the SS Benalla sailing out of London on 8 May 1924, and was sent to work on a farm 4 miles north of Millicent, South Australia.

Mount Gambier Railway Station built of wood was erected in 1879. In was demolished and an Art Deco station was built in 1918. The line connected to Naracoorte, Bordertown and Adelaide. By 1897 the line connected Mount Gambier to Millicent and Beachport

'Merle', Screw Steamer

'Merle', Screw Steamer

Screw steamer 'Merle', on a sightseeing trip on the River Murray at Blanchetown, after conversion to a motor vessel for tourist trips between Murray Bridge to Blanchetown and downstream to the Lakes. It sank after a fire and lies just south of the railway bridge at Murray Bridge. There was also a Paddle Steamer 'Merle', which sank during a storm in 1917. It was built in Morgan in 1904 by Edward Dienier and named after one of his daughters. It pulled the barges Eva Millicent and Flo D until it sank during a storm in Lake Alexandrina in 1917, the crew and passengers taking refuge on the barge Flo until help arrived [see PRG 1258/1/2675 for another copy of this image].

Old Homestead, Padthaway, Millicent

[General description] This low stone cottage has an iron roof and prominent chimneys. It was the original homestead of Robert Lawson and his wife Eliza when they established Padthaway Station from 1847. The station flourished and a large new two storey house, suitable for a wealthy grazier's family, replaced it as the main residence in 1882. For a view of the new homestead see B 3717. Both the old and the new buildings are still in use in 2010. New Homestead, Padthaway, Millicent

[General description] This large two storey Victorian mansion is built from stone and has spacious verandahs all around the front, decorated with iron lace. It was built in 1882 by Robert Lawson for his wife Eliza to replace their original humble station homestead. For a view of the old homestead see B 3716. Old Unley Inn

Old Unley Inn

Old Unley Inn, Unley. According to a researcher, this building relates to the 74th Infantry Regiment. This was the first headquarters of the 74th Infantry Regiment, in the de-licensed Unley Inn at 158-160 Unley Road, South Australia, used from 1 July 1911 until 13 March 1915. The Unley Inn had been built in 1847-48 by William Ewens, who had come to South Australia on the Prince Regent in 1839; he was a publican in Adelaide in the early 1840s but in December 1847 he retired on 1½ acres of land at Unley where he built the Unley Inn and took out a Licence the following year. He died soon after, but his wife Sarah continued to manage the Unley Inn while living in the adjoining cottage. This photograph is from the period between May 1912 and June 1913 when the regiment was known as the 74th Infantry (Boothby Battalion): the drill hall has the title 'HEADQUARTERS BOOTHBY BATTALION', with a smaller sign above the verandah, '74th INFANTRY'. In June 1913 the battalion was redesignated 74th (Boothby) Infantry. On 13 March 1915, the new drill hall and headquarters of the 74th (Boothby) Infantry was established in Thomas Street, Unley.

The 'Merle' paddle steamer

The 'Merle' paddle steamer

GENERAL: The 'Merle', a stern wheel paddle steamer owned by river trader Edward Diener; it pulled the shop barges 'Eva Millicent' and 'Flo D' between 1903 and 1917 when it sank in Lake Alexandrina, about a year later the 'Flo' was reconstructed as the 'Kookaburra'. The craft was originally named after Merle the daughter of Edward and Catherine Diener.
