Cattle Market
[General description] Stockyards and associated buildings at the cattle market near North Terrace. [On back of photograph] 'The cattle market / 12th August 1903 / The market was removed to the Abattoirs on its establishment in about 1913' There is a small detailed map of its site on the back of the photograph.
Destitute Asylum and Police Barracks
A family poses for the photographer in front of the Mounted Police Barracks Armoury (on the right) and the Colonial Store (or Destitute Asylum), on the left. (For site see map of Adelaide in 1871 Almanack.) These buildings face south and are about 120 yards north of North Terrace. The extreme left is 70 yards east of Kintore Avenue. The near side of the building on the extreme right is 158 yards east of Kintore Avenue. The open space is the site of the Parade Ground.

Destitute Asylum. Stone wall at the rear of the Public Library of South Australia, formerly part of the Destitute Asylum block 21 February 1956. The photograph was taken on the day demolition of the wall commenced. Frome Footbridge
[General description] This narrow wooden bridge spans the River Torrens which is very low at this time. Beyond the steep and eroded river banks are open paddocks, trees and buildings. Note the post and rail fences. [On back of photograph] 'Frome footbridge across the Torrens at the foot of Frome Road. Looking east with old Exhibition Building in distance. Government House, Adelaide
[General description] West side of Kintore Avenue showing the new eastern wall of Government House closest to the Parade Grounds. Trees are seen on the other side of the wall and in the street. [On back of photograph] 'Government House Wall / Kintore Avenue, west side / April 30th 1939 / Erected in 1938 / Compare with B7215 and B7216.' There is a map showing exact location.

Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science, Frome Road, July 28th 1941. This was erected in 1938-39. A small map on the back of the photograph shows the Institutes location.

[General description] A different view of the building shown in B 14357 (taken on the same day) of part of the Mounted Police Barracks, about to be demolished. There is a site map on the back of this photograph.
Observatory
Observatory, West Terrace was built for Sir Charles Todd, the pioneer of a network of telegraph lines to connect the colony of South Australia to the world. The complex included the Todd family residence. The earliest verandah covered section of the main building was completed in 1860. The tower and transit room and domed equatorial room was completed by 1876. The Observatory became the hub for meteorological observation stations that reported daily using the telegraph system. Regular forecasted and maps were published using this data. The complex was demolished shortly after this photograph was taken
Parliament
Interior of Parliamentary Library showing the book stacks, reading area and two large world globes. The library was established in 1852 when a Standing Library Committee purchased books and maps.
Public Library
Country lending service of the Public Library situated in 1943 at the rear of the South Australian Museum. This photograph was taken June 17, 1943. The weatherboard building was erected in 1942 on a vacant site. For a view of the site of the Country Lending Service prior to erection of the building see B10887. [A group from the Australasian Ornithologists' Union visited Eyre Peninsula in October 1909, with their activities documented in the press. This photo was taken sometime between 6 October and 15 October 1909, the dates of the expedition's arrival at and departure from Port Lincoln.]
