[General description] Stockyards and associated buildings at the cattle market near North Terrace. [On back of photograph] 'The cattle market / 12th August 1903 / The market was removed to the Abattoirs on its establishment in about 1913' There is a small detailed map of its site on the back of the photograph.

A family poses for the photographer in front of the Mounted Police Barracks Armoury (on the right) and the Colonial Store (or Destitute Asylum), on the left. (For site see map of Adelaide in 1871 Almanack.) These buildings face south and are about 120 yards north of North Terrace. The extreme left is 70 yards east of Kintore Avenue. The near side of the building on the extreme right is 158 yards east of Kintore Avenue. The open space is the site of the Parade Ground.

[General description] This narrow wooden bridge spans the River Torrens which is very low at this time. Beyond the steep and eroded river banks are open paddocks, trees and buildings. Observatory

Observatory

Observatory, West Terrace was built for Sir Charles Todd, the pioneer of a network of telegraph lines to connect the colony of South Australia to the world. The complex included the Todd family residence. The earliest verandah covered section of the main building was completed in 1860. The tower and transit room and domed equatorial room was completed by 1876. The Observatory became the hub for meteorological observation stations that reported daily using the telegraph system. Regular forecasted and maps were published using this data. The complex was demolished shortly after this photograph was taken

Country lending service of the Public Library situated in 1943 at the rear of the South Australian Museum. This photograph was taken June 17, 1943. The weatherboard building was erected in 1942 on a vacant site. For a view of the site of the Country Lending Service prior to erection of the building see B10887.
