The Institute at Lobethal advertising the "talkies". Photograph was taken on 15th July, 1933. Lobethal had a high population of workers during the late 19th and early 20th century due to the establishment of the Onkaparinga Woollen Mill. The Institute Building was constructed in 1898. This is an example of non-classical design. Only the more important towns constructed their own Institute Buildings. Due to the advent of WW1 anti-German prejudice led to changing the name to Tweedvale but later it reverted to Lobethal.
