The main street in Lobethal. Lobethal was settled by Prussian immigrants who originally went to Hahndorf but were alerted to good land in the upper Onkaparinga. The brewery was turned into the Lobethal Tweed Factory which later became the Onkaparinga Woollen Company

The main street at Lobethal. Photograph was taken 15th July, 1933 and shows the gently sloping road lined with shops shaded by deep verandahs. A petrol garage and a shop selling ice cream can be seen. Lobethal was settled in 1842 by Prussian immigrants who arrived in South Australian onboard the 'Skjold'. The town was built in the Silesian Hufendorf style with cottages built along the main road on long narrow strips of land. The village common allowed families to graze their animals. The main road was known as Mill Road.

Lobethal: general view showing the roofs of the woollen Mill in the foreground. The mills, originally called the Lobethal Tweed Factory, are extensive and dominate the township. The former brewery turned Tweed Mills later became the Onkaparinga Woollen Company that closed in 1992.
