[General description] This view along the main road of the township of Lobethal shows houses and gardens and a church on the near left. Two workmen stand on ladders propped up against the front wall of the church. Another man on a ladder is working on a untility pole. Along with other German place names during the Great War the township was re-named Tweedvale (1917), but reverted to its original name in 1935. Woollen Mill, Lobethal

Premises of the Woollen Mill at Lobethal [See B 362 for a similar photograph]. The woollen mill was built in the old premises of the FW Kleinschmidt brewery. In 1870 equipment from a tiny mill in Hanhndorf was moved into Kleinschmidt's along with new machinery. Buildings were added to the mill although obtaining an adequate water supply was always a problem. In 1887 Scotsman Robert Redpath came in as manager and productivity increased. The mill provided uniforms for railway workers and the armed forces
