Looking across the Port River from Birkenhead to Queen's Wharf. Notes on the back of the photograph say "Identification notes by Captain Lee. The name of the ketch in the foreground is not known. The steamer inside this ketch is the SS "Glenelg". Inside the "Glenelg" is the barque "Agincourt". The barque (with painted ports) alongside the wharf is the "Star of India". On the extreme right of the photograph can be seen the tug "Adelaide".

Notes on the back of photograph from Captain Lee say "The barquentine alongside the wharf, inside the ketch drying sails, is the "Ocean Ranger". The stern of the vessel on the extreme right is that of the barque "Lintrathen".

The ship with painted ports alongside the wharf, bow on is the "City of Paris" and the barque outside the "City of Paris "is the "Coorong". The fourth vessel from the left is the brigantine "Odalisk". The fifth vessel shown on the extreme right is not known".

Saltia Hotel, Saltia

Saltia Hotel. David Lithgow was the licensee in the early 1880s. Copy in Sweet Collection folder 5 has Sweet signature (Sweet Adelaide 397). Saltia was a town between Port Augusta and Quorn. The hotel as built in 1859 to service the bullock drivers and the proprietor was David Lithgow. A school was established in 1864 with twenty students. Evening classes were available for students who could not attend during the daytime. By 1880 there were forty three students attending the school. Thomas Lees house was demolished to make way for the railwayline and later the town died as there was no need for the bullock teams to stop at Saltia. A famous son of Saltia was John Maslin (1826-1908) who was a sheep property owner.

The sign "Brown's" on the far side of the photograph (to the right of the clock) is on the eastern alignment of Blyth Street. Shops and business to be seen include Sharples Printers established in 1898, Victoria Hotel (proprietors at this time were Frank Webber and Arthur Lee), The Metro Cinema (film showing was "The Citadel"), Wiggs and Son, Alf Beck, Brown's and Miller Anderson.

[General description] A group of school children (girls in white pinafores) stand in the left foreground of this view of the Bedford Hotel, a two storey stuccoed building with arched doors, mullion windows and decorative parapet. A couple poses at the entrance over which hangs a large lantern. George Lee was the licensee at this time. A hotel has been on (or near) this site since 1840, originally called the Ship Inn. [On back of photograph] 'Currie Street, north side / 1891-93 / The right side of the Bedford Hotel is 2 yards west of Elizabeth Street and frontage is 15.5 yards / Presented by W.C.C. Deland'.

King William Street, Adelaide, east side, on February 12th, 1924. The Napoleon Hotel first existed from 1847 and has been rebuilt in 1875 and again in 1919. At the time of this photo the licensee was Arthur James Lee. For a view of the old building, see B 1090. The left side of the hotel is 35 yards south of Grenfell Street. For alterations and additions effected in 1935, see B 6813.

Men with an airplane and vehicle used while salvaging the Yandra

Men apparently handling oxy-acetelene bottles beside an airplane (VH-RAZ) and a vehicle used while salvaging the Yandra. A researcher has provided the following information: this photograph was taken near the landing strip on Wedge Island, the nearest convenient location to South Neptune Island where the Yandra was stranded. The man on the right is Norm Growden, owner of Wedge Island at the time. The aircraft is a de Havilland Beaver, the first of many later owned by Robby's Aerial Services. The aircraft was destroyed in a crash at Narrung, South Australia, in November 1959 and Adrian Lee, the manager and chief pilot of the company, was killed.

Juan's parents were Gomez Ricardo and Mary nee Newton, Mary died 6 October 1894. Gomez married Bertha Lee 23 August 1903. Juan married Clara Layton 19 June 1907 and their son, Louis Joseph, was born Adelaide 25 December 1910.
