Summary

Officers of the military unit which was later to become the 10th Battalion Army: L-R: Lieut. H.L. Shepherd, Col. Walter Dollman, Col. Lee, Lt. Nordmann, Col. James Rowell, Col. J.C. Reade, Brigadier General S. Price Weir, Sgt. Major J.J. Higgins, Lieut. Colonel D.H. Smith. A researcher has suggested that this photograph was actually taken before the 10th Battalion was established, because of the mix of uniforms being worn. [Duplicate of B 23146.]

Historical information

Price Weir was the 1st CO of the 10th Battalion when it was formed in 1914; and Walter Dollman became the 1st CO of the 27th Battalion in 1915.

According to a researcher, 'Adelaide Rifles' after Federation became, in part, the 10th Australian Infantry Regiment and then after compulsory training in 1912 became several units numbered 74 to 81. In 1914 the 78th (the City one that sort of inherited the original identity) more or less became the 10th Battalion AIF. So there is a kind of 'old' 10th and a 'new' 10th with slightly indirect links via the 78th Battalion (Militia) going from pre 1912 to 1914. In that the 74th more or less launched the 27th AIF - and there were other units similarly launched later.

According to another researcher D.H. Smith is actually Diedrich Heinrich Schmidt,1864-1939, whose name was anglicized in response to anti-German feeling. In another newspaper report, 'Lt Nordman' is identified as Wilfed Gottlieb Nordman, who was also subjected to anti-German feeling - see 'The Mirror of Australia', Sunday 10th October, 1915, page 2.
