Cheer Up Hut
[General description] This large room has tables laid for a meal with 'helpers' (ladies in long white dresses including a nun-like veil) standing by. Photographs of dignitaries line the walls and there is a stage draped with an Australian flag. On the stage is a piano and a phonograph. See B 5504 for a brief description of the Cheer Up Society. East Terrace
East Terrace looking south from a point a little north of Rundle Street during the first visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. The royal couple were representing Albert Edward, Prince of Wales and Alexandra who were preparing for the coronation following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. The Duke and Duchess were visiting Australia to open the first Federal Parliament in Melbourne. A large set of three arches has been built across East Terrace and festooned with greenery. Flags, streamers and greenery hang above the street. A grandstand has been erected in the parklands to view of the Royal Couple.


Exhibition Building
[General description] Amidst bunting, pomp and ceremony a large crowd is in attendance for the laying of the foundation stone for the Exhibition building. It was designed by architects Withall and Wells, to house the Exhibition in celebration of Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887. The stone does not appear to be placed in the foundations proper as the basements are already completed. Dignitaries are standing on a dais where the ceremony is taking place and the actual stone can be seen in the centre of the view. In the foreground uniformed police, mounted and on foot are in attendance and there is a uniformed guard (police or military) wearing white helmets. A sign in front of the construction site reads "No admittance except on business". [On back of photograph] 'Laying foundation stone, Jubilee Exhibition'.


Exhibition Building
[General description] A large crowd is in attendance at the opening of the Exhibition Building, designed by architects Withall and Wells, to house the Exhibition in celebration of Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887. Police greys can be seen on duty. Part of the eastern Annex, which contained a concert hall, can be seen on the right. Exhibition Building
[General description] This view looks along the centre aisle to the stage. This large airy space has decorative iron lace balconies and window panels, with murals adorning the ceiling, from which electric pendant lights hang. Flags and bunting have been added for the occasion. Glover Children's Playground
[General description] The Union Jack flies over the Glover playground whilst children use various play equipment including a swing, maypole and wading pool. In the foreground a cheerful group is seen in the pool. Note the large wicker perambulator on the left. [On back of photograph] 'South Terrace / Glover Children's Playgrounds / 1927'.


Government House
[General description] Government House, Adelaide, set on an extensive lawn and framed by the branch of a large conifer. It was probably occupied by Governor Sir Winston Joseph Dugan at this time. The rambling two storey building has verandahs and a portico with palm trees on either side. A pair of cannnons guard the entrance.

Government House entrance gates in 1936. A large diamond shaped plaque bearing the South Australian Coat of Arms is displayed on the left pillar of the entrance gates. Sprinklers can be seen watering the front lawns.


Government House wall
Government House Wall, King William Road, Adelaide, with large painted sign "ENLIST! WE ARE IN GRAVE DANGER. ENLIST!" The sign was painted in March 1917. Initial attempts to remove the sign in December 1918 proved difficult and it was painted over.


Government Printing Office
Government Printing Office, Adelaide. Corner of North Terrace and King William Road, Looking north west from the Adelaide Club, North Terrace. The entrance to Government House can be seen on the right of the photograph. The City Baths can be seen further down King William Road on the western side as the road dips down towards the River Torrens. The curved roofs of the Adelaide Railway Station can be seen on the left of the photograph. There is a large turning circle in the middle of the intersection where horse drawn vehicles make regular turns. The photograph was presented by Mrs H Coultas. On the reverse of this photograph is attached a duplicate copy of B 941 which depicts the Adelaide Bridge around the 1880's (also presented by Mrs H Coultas).


Adelaide Hospital
[General description] This recently completed building, seen from the opposite side of the road, was designed in the Inter-war free classical style by George Gavin Lawson. It is built from red brick and concrete and features a large portico. See B 3745 for another view and information re the building. West side is 127 yards east of Tavistock Street.'


Adelaide Hospital
[General description] The large three storey building with dormer windows is the hospital's nurses quarters (later known as Margaret Graham Nurses' Home). A feature of this building is Its tiered balconies that are supported by columns. It is partially obscured by Frome Street's young plane trees. The dispensary building was later demolished. Adelaide Hospital
Porter's Lodge at Adelaide Hospital. The blue stone lodge faces east and stands on the west side of the entrance gates in North Terrace at the top of Frome Road hill. It was demolished in 1932. A large morton bay tree shades the lodge.


Construction work, Royal Adelaide Hospital
Royal Adelaide Hospital, North Terrace, new buildings under construction, 3rd July 1964. Framework for the building is taking shape. A large crane is seen in the centre of the view. See B 15528 for a plan.


Mounted Police Barracks
[General description] The building on the right, part of the Mounted Police Barracks (built 1854) is obscured by a large tree. The staircase of the main building (which faces the inner quadrangle) can be seen through the archway on the left. [General description] Buildings of the quadrangle showing the wooden staircase mounted on the outside. The verandahs on the second storey are supported by large ornamental wooden brackets. The Mounted Police Barracks and the Armoury complex were purpose built as part of a group surrounding a large courtyard that was entered by two swing gates surmounted by arches. This photograph shows deck chairs placed in the sun in the courtyard.

[General description] This view looks east along North Terrace, showing part of the gardens with deciduous trees, lawns and a rock garden in the foreground. An electric tram travels along North Terrace which is lined with large utility poles. City buildings form the backdrop. North Terrace
[General description] The signal box on the corner of North Terrace and King William Street overlooks the large crowd gathered to celebrate Armisitice Day. Some people are standing on its platform, many more are crowded onto the balconies of the North Terrace buildings. [On back of photograph] 'November 12, 1918 (day following Armistice Day).


North Terrace
North Terrace, looking West from Kintore Avenue. Parade of members of the 1st Australian Expeditionary Force, South Australian Section, marching through Adelaide streets September 21, 1914 prior to embarkation to the European War 1914. A large crowd has gathered to see them off.


Exhibition Building
Exhibition Building, Frome Road was erected in the Police Paddock below the Royal Adelaide Hospital and adjoining the Botanic Gardens. It was completed in 1860. The large simple building featured semi-circular windows and paired pilasters. Wide verandahs completed the design. In this photograph a carriage pulled by two pairs of mules is standing outside the Old Exhibition Building.


Parliament
Parliament, North Terrace taken from the Shell Building on the corner of North Terrace and King William Street. The large building housing the Railway Station dominates the scene. Part of the new Parliament House is built on one side of the block and gardens and palm trees take up the space on the adjoining block.


Parliament House, Adelaide
[General description] This is the first section of the House of Assembly by architects Edmund Wright and Lloyd Tayler whose design won a competition in 1873 but due to difficulties with the site and costs was not completed until 1889, a year after Wright's death. It is an impressive two-storey Kapunda marble clad building with granite basement, in the Victorian Academic Classical style. It features four tall columns in front of its entrance, with four corresponding urns on top of its balustraded parapet. The eastern section is yet to come (1939) The original design included a large dome but this was never built due to the expense. / Right side is 43 yards west of king William Road / Frontage 34 yards'.


Parliament
Interior of Parliamentary Library showing the book stacks, reading area and two large world globes. The library was established in 1852 when a Standing Library Committee purchased books and maps.
