View of Victor Harbor showing the causeway leading to Granite Island and buildings in the town. The horse drawn railway was extended along the Causeway to Granite Island in the mid 1860s to service large American and European clippers. Bales of wool were paddled down the Murray, freighted to Victor Harbor then shipped to the world.

The Rumbelow family residence in Franklin Parade, Yilki, as it appeared approximately 1880. The original home on the right was a wooden structure referred to by the family as the 'Crystal Palace'; the stone house on the left is 'Yeltanna'. See also B 70322.

Wool Storage Shed
Government wool storage shed at Victor Harbor. A large wool store was built alongside (up against) this one in 1868 where the little hut is in the photo. The store in this photo was always called 'the good shed' locally, being the government owned railways store. It was transferred to the Victor Harbour District Council in the 1980s and is now (2011) the 'Whale Centre'.

[General description] This two storey red brick hotel building has a wide verandah and a first floor balcony on one side and displays its name and that of its proprietor, Bill Madigan, on its parapet. A large advertisement for Penfold's Ports is painted on its wall. Existing since 1843, this hotel was originally located further east at 82 Walkerville Terrace. It was relocated to its present position in 1897. Note the utility pole with prop. Waikerie soldiers' memorial institute
Black and white photograph of the Waikerie Soldiers' Memorial Institute, which was built in memory of the ten soldiers from Waikerie who died in WWI. The foundation stone for the memorial hall was laid on 18 March 1920 by General Birdwood, who was on tour, and the building was opened on Saturday 18 June 1921 by Mr W.D. Price M.C., president of the Returned Soldier's Association, and a large Union Jack was unfurled. This photograph may possibly be of the 1921 opening. A researcher has noted that the hall was later added to, and this new Institute Hall was officially opened on Thursday 30 August 1928, by Sir William Sowden, chairman of the Institutes' Association.

Wallaroo Jetty. (Sweet Adelaide 804). Wallaroo had three jetties and was South Australia's second busiest port. During the gradual change from sail to steam both kinds of vessels were in port at the same time and a large population was needed to manually handle the loading and unloading of goods

View of Wallaroo Smelting Works in approximately 1917. The smelting works was an extensive complex of buildings with numerous chimneys. The smelter began operation in 1861 and was closed in 1923. The mine struggled in the years after World War 1 due to the downturn in the price of copper, closing for long periods and losing large amounts of money between 1919 and 1922. The mine shut down in 1923.

Grave of Mrs Paton at Wirrega Station. Mr John Binnie was owner of Wirrega Station which was situated near Bordertown and was a grazing lease first taken out in the 1840s. Early Scottish pastoralists established three large sheep stations in the Tatiara Region in South East South Australia.

Woodforde Residence
'Rostrevor' at Woodforde when it was the private residence of Mr Ross Thompson Reid. Reid arrived in South Australia at the age of six and later built a magnificent mansion with his accumulated wealth made as a successful pastoralist. He named it "Rostrevor" after a seaside resort in Ireland. The hall was constructed in two stages with the southern two storey side completed in 1878 and the arches and northern side added in 1901. Within the grounds were well kept gardens, orange and lemon groves, stone fruit trees, coach house, caretakers residence, stables and a large lake.

[General description] St. Margaret's Church of England, Woodville, built in 1855 by local landowner John Bristow Hughes who wanted to name it after his wife. Bishop Short disagreed so a compromise was reached, the Church being named after Saint Margaret of Scotland. Built from limestone the church is English in style with a large square tower.

[General description] This large iron-roofed two storey house is viewed from the sweep of its drive with semi-formal gardens including palms and roses. It is built from brick with cement dressings and is surrounded by extensive verandahs with iron lace decoration with an outside staircase. Doctor Helen Mayo founded the St. Peter's Hospital for babies in Winchester Street, St. Peter's in 1913. She still retained a strong presence at the hospital after 1917 when it was taken over by the government and moved to this building at Belmore Terrace, Woodville where is was known as Mareeba Babies' Hospital. It was previously a convalescent hospital for soldiers. [On back of photograph] 'Reproduced in the Advertiser / Mareeba Babies Hospital / Woodville Park / 1928'.

James Cooke
James Cooke, brother and partner of Archibald Cooke. A memorial commemorates these first settlers of Kingston who took up land near Maria Creek in 1856. James joined his Scottish born brother six years after Archibald immigrated to South Australia in 1837. Together they held property at Wellington and the area that is now called Cooke Plains. They were granted land at Lacepede Bay and combined their pastoral pursuits with mercantile and shipping business. A short jetty was built at Port Caroline and opened up the first coastal service to Lacepede Bay. They built a large wool store and supported bullock teams which serviced the Tatiara area. James arranged for a railway line to be built between Kingston and Naracoorte which was opened in 1877.

Sir Thomas Elder
[General description] Head and upper body portrait of Sir Thomas Elder in seven eighths view. He is wearing the insignia for the 'Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George' (G.C.M.G.) which he received in 1887. He was a successful pastoralist and businessman who built up a large fortune which enabled him to provide support for several exploring expeditions and philanthropic causes. In 1874 he gave 20,000 pounds towards the establishment of the Adelaide University and later endowed the School of Music and the Medical School. These donations led to his honours, KCMG in 1878 and GCMG in 1887. He left generous legacies to many public institutions and charities in his will. He was also a Member of the Legislative Council in 1863-69 and 1871-78.

Lithograph of Edward John Eyre, painted by Charles Mercier, and engraved by Charles Tomkins. Published October 10th 1868 by the proprietor T.W. Green, 36 Union Grove, Clapham, Surrey. Edward John Eyre, explorer, colonial administrator arrived from England, via Sydney with 1,000 sheep which he sold for a large profit. He later explored north to the Flinders Ranges, west to beyond Ceduna, west along the coastline of the Great Australian Bight, the Nullabor Plain and Albany in Western Australia.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Joseph Fisher in three quarter view. He is grey haired with a neatly trimmed beard and wears a rose in his lapel. One of Adelaide's prominent citizens, he was a newspaper owner (The 'Register' and 'Observer'), parliamentarian and benefactor . An astute accountant and businessman, he was director for several firms including the Bank of Adelaide, the Port Adelaide Dock Co. and the South Australian Gas Co. He was an enthusiastic gardener, tending his large garden at Woodfield, Fullarton.

Joseph Fisher, accountant and parliamentarian was commercial manager of the Register and Observer and with his intelligent, firm and tactful manner he guided the business through many storms. He was an enthusiastic gardener and loved his roses and trees at his home 'Woodfield' at Fullarton. He renovated his home and filled it with local art. He represented Sturt in the House of Assembly and sat in the Legislative Council. Joseph is photographed here in his garden, hoe in hand, looking at a rose bush planted in front of a flowering hedge. A large fir tree grows in the background.
