Summary

Two men standing middle and right in back row were thought to be Philip Charley and Sidney Kidman. The details of the men in the photograph are the Staff of Mount Gipps Station from left standing; George Lind, Philip Charley, Sidney Kidman. Seated, at left thought to be George McCulloch but he is now believed to be the man on the right. A researcher has suggested that the man seated on the right is Philip Charley. Historical information

Further information supplied by Chris Upton and confirmed by Angus McCulloch (2008) revealed Sidney Kidman was never on the staff at Mount Gipps station, but was a butcher in Silverton and Broken Hill. However according to a researcher Jill Bowen (2007), in her meticulously researched book, states that Kidman ran away from home in about 1870, aged 13. He first worked with Harry Raines in the Barrier area but Bowen quotes Kidman as saying "Harry Raines was hunted out. It left me without a job so I went to Mount Gipps Station where I got 10 shillings a week which was a rise in pay". She also states that Kidman subsequently moved to Cobar where he set himself up as a butcher but later, when he returned to the Barrier he was the junior partner in his brother Sackville Kidman's butchery business, largely responsible for buying and droving stock. Philip Charley II knew Sidney Kidman but it was some years after 1873. According to another researcher, George McCulloch in 1873 was 25 years of age (1848-1907) and therefore is not the man seated on the left, and another researcher agrees. The researcher added: 'George Albert Mahana Lind was born at Lancefield, Victoria in 1862 and died at Hawthorn, Melbourne, Victoria in 1941, aged 79. He would have been only 11 years old in 1873 and could not be the man standing on the left. Philip Charley was born at Ballarat, Victoria in 1863 and died at Richmond, NSW in 1937. He would have been only 10 years old in 1873 and could not be the man standing in the middle'. Another researcher has provided the following information: 'This photo is around 1884 as there was no need for a photo of these men prior as the ore body they found was in 1883. Sidney Kidman was a share holder of BHP as he sold 10 head of cattle to James Pool for his one share.Sidney Kidman was a one fourteenth share holder of BHP. This photo is of George Urquhart back left, George McCulloch centre back, George Lind back right, Sidney Kidman front left, Unknown front right. These men are the founders of BHP 1883.'
