Historical information

The names of Edithburgh and the Hundred of Ramsay are associated with Lady Edith Ramsay, first wife of Governor Sir James Fergusson, and daughter of the tenth Earl of Dalhousie, Governor-General of India. Lady Fergusson was a devout churchwoman, who trained the choir and played the organ at St. Paul's Church, Adelaide. She died at Glanville Hall, near Largs Bay. Being aware that she was dying, she asked to see her little son, so a trooper carried the child in front of him from Government House so that her last wish could be granted. Her son grew up to become General Sir Charles Fergusson who succeeded Viscount Jellicoe as Governor-General of New Zealand.
