Old Mill, Mount Barker

[General description] This is a bronze tablet which is to be erected at Nixon's Mill, Windmill Hill, Mt. Barker Road. The text on it reads: 'Preserved as a memorial of the pioneering days of South Australia / This windmill was built by F.R. Nixon in 1842 who sold it to Walter Paterson in 1844. It was worked by him until 1853 when it was sold to F.W. Wittwer. It ceased operations in 1864 and was donated to the public in 1928 by A.E. Braendler / Tablet presented by Walter Paterson's grandchildren' [On back of photograph] An article describing the process behind the renovation of this historic mill has been cut from the Advertiser, January 11th, 1929 and is attached to the back of the photograph.

Flinders Column, Mount Lofty

[General description] The Flinders Column on Mount Lofty, framed by a large gum tree branch and silhouetted against the sky. The aircraft beacon mounted on top of the column was turned off on July 28th 1953, being no longer needed as it was to be replaced by 'new and more efficient radio aids', according to the Civil Aviation Director, Mr. D.S. Graham. Floods of January 24, 25. Reclaimed swamp at Murray Bridge becomes an immense inland sea. It was reported in the Advertiser that within a few miles of Murray Bridge there were miniature lakes hundreds of acres in extent. The photograph shows levies and a bridge disappearing into the flood water.

May Dunstone, nee Lillywhite, outside the Store and Post Office, Penfield, October 1940. Mrs. Dunstone's husband John Bennett Kerr Dunstone was the storekeeper and postmaster. The post office operated at this location between 1856 and 1951.

City Council Offices and Town Hall, Port Adelaide. The erection of the Council Offices was commenced in June 1939 and completed in November 1939. The imposing Town Hall on Vincent Street was opened on 29 August, 1866. The foundation stone was laid in 1865 and the clock was imported from London aboard the "Indes" in 1867.

"Lena M", Ferryboat

[General description] 'Lena M' looks as if she has had a long, hard working life as she makes her way slowly across the Port River with a handful of passengers on board. Part of the Birkenhead Bridge can be seen in the background. Launched in 1923 she was the last ferry going across the river to Birkenhead. Built by Jack Murch and his two sons Reginald and Lochie she had a double ended hull and a kerosene engine. The Murches operated the service until 1940. [On back of photograph] 'Port River ferry / 'Lena M' / 1940 / Her last trip was made on the day of the opening of the Birkenhead Bridge, December 14th 1940'.

"Vale House", Walkerville

"Vale House", Lansdowne Terrace, Walkerville, once occupied by the Levi Family. Vale House is Adelaide's earliest surviving substantial residence. It was built in the first five years of white settlement in South Australia. The house was occupied by several early colonists including Captain Edward Frome and William Clark. In 1853 it purchased by Philip Levi. During the following 96 years of ownership by the Levi family Vale House was the centre of social activity for Adelaide gentry. This photograph taken in 1948 shows the house in an overgrown garden with a car parked near the verandah
