George Henry Pitt

George Henry Pitt

George Henry Pitt, Principal Librarian, Public Library of South Australia. He was also an archivist, historian and was born on 21 January 1891 at Norwood, one of five children born to James and Annie Pitt. George Pitt laid the foundation of a pictorial collection which included a systematic record of Adelaide's architectural development. This was done on a modest budget for six years in the 1930 without an assistant. He also negotiated to to set up professionally staffed libraries in government departments

22 horses driven by a lead driver, a rear driver and two 'whippers' taking a 30-ton steel mill to the Brighton Cement Works. A researcher has suggested that the lead driver is Phillip F. Smith. St. Patrick's Church, Grote St

[On back of photograph] 'St. Patrick's Church, Grote Street / Acres 319 & 319 / March 1914 / (Photo by Krischock) / Frontage: 23 yards / Right side is 17 yards west of Burton Avenue. Left side is 133 yards east of West Terrace.' [General description] A priest can be seen standing inside the doorway of this newly completed church, seen in three quarter view. Outside a woman tends to a baby in a large perambulator. Designed by Woods Bagot the church was dedicated on 15 March, 1914. It was said to be inspired by the Church of the Holy Spirit in Florence and the design, based on a basilica, originally included a sacristy and dome. However a combination of insufficient funds and the outbreak of World War 1meant that the project remained unfinished.

The photograph appeared in the 'Chronicle' on Saturday 21 August 1926, page 40, with the following caption: FIVE INTER-STATE TEAMS. Krischock, photo. Lacrosse teams, representing South and Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, met in Adelaide for a series of games. They were accorded a civic reception by the acting Lord Mayor (Alderman Isaacs). The centre picture is of the teams photographed with members of the Adelaide City Council and local lacrosse enthusiasts'.
