Summary

[General description] The Flinders Column on Mount Lofty, framed by a large gum tree branch and silhouetted against the sky. The aircraft beacon mounted on top of the column was turned off on July 28th 1953, being no longer needed as it was to be replaced by 'new and more efficient radio aids', according to the Civil Aviation Director, Mr. D.S. Graham. [On back of photograph] 'Flinders Column / Mount Lofty / after its conversion into a beacon for aircraft / June 1938' (Another hand) 'The light was discontinued on 28 July 1953 (See 'News', July 29, 1953, p. 3) / One light last week on evening of July 27, 1953 / See also 'Advertiser', July 30, 1953, 13 i'.
