Opening of Prince Alfred College in 1869. The foundation stone was laid for the main building in 1869 by HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh. The first students commenced at the college in 1869. The photograph shows a large tent that has been erected as part of the celebrations. Men and women mingle on the area in front of the school building.

[General description] This building is in the Spanish Mission style. The original caption, published in the Chronicle under this photograph (cited below) read: 'A little bit of Spain in Adelaide. The new preparatory school at Prince Alfred College. The Spanish style of architecture strikes a novel note in scholastic buildings -Phillips' The architect was Hubert Henry Cowell.
