Dr Kent's Residence, Kent Town

Painting of Dr. Kent's house on the site of the Kent Town Brewery. Dr Kent brought Sir Edwin Smith into the world in Staffordshire in his capacity as medical practitioner. Later Sir Edwin Smith eastablished a brewery on the site of the Doctor's cottage at Kent Town. The artist, Alexander Charles Kelly (1811-1877) was a newly arrived Scottish medical practitioner and winegrower.

[General description] This imposing stone church and hall was designed by architects E.W. Wright and E.J. Woods and built in 1865. Site is the intersection of Fullarton Road and Grenfell Street, Kent town. The road does not appear to be sealed as yet. [On back of photograph] 'Kent Town Methodist Church / Before 1927'.

Memorial Hall at Prince Alfred College, Kent Town. The College Foundation Stone was laid by HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, second son of Queen Victoria, during his visit to South Australia in 1867. The Memorial Hall was opened in 1928 by Governor Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven. It was dedicated to old scholars who fell in the Great War. Contained inside is the new library which has two stained glass windows depicting the lives of the Crusaders. The building which also contains classrooms, a laboratory and dressing rooms was first occupied in 1924.

Methodist Church, Kent Town

Methodist Church, Kent Town

The site of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Kent Town was chosen by Rev. DR Draper and the three allotments were presented to the church. It was opened in 1865 with 7,000 people present to join in the celebration service. The church is cruciform in design and can seat 1,100 people. The Neo- Gothic church is built of bluestone and the architects were Wright and Woods. The original pipe organ came from England in 1873.

Prince Alfred College, Kent Town. The main building was built in three sections in 1869. The central section was ready for use in 1869 and housed offices, teaching areas, the Headmaster's residence and boarding accommodation. Later the southern Waterman Wing provided an assembly area and a laboratory.
