[General description] J.N. Taylor's Motorcycle shop, agents for B.S.A. and Indian Motorcycles, has been built into the side of what was once a fine church building, still with damaged stained glass in its windows. (See B 71558 for the Congregational Church). On the left is Knuckey's tyre shop. Motorcycles and a truck are parked at the kerb. The ABC apprently occupied the rear building (with centilever verandah) in 1945. Small section of building (without verandah) on right was erected after April 1931. Compare with B 5928

Grenfell Street, Adelaide, south side, looking from East terrace. The Woodman Hotel, [later to become the Producers], which existed on this site since 22nd March, 1939, is seen on the left. The licensee at this time is C.R. Jones. The tower from the Congregational Church on Hindmarsh Square can be seen faintly on the right in the distance. The road is muddy and wheel-rutted. Grenfell Street, east end, after the fire at Burford's Soap factory. WH Burford and Son were soap and candle makers. The factory was on the corner of Grenfell Street and East Terrace. Residents complained about the smell from the soapworks and Peacock's Tannery. A fire which started in the adjoining timber yard destroyed the factory. Another was built in Sturt Street. A researcher notes that there was also a fire at Burford's Adam Street, Hindmarsh site in 1907.

Aurora Hotel, Pirie Street

The Aurora Hotel on the south-east corner of Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square, December 1970. It was first known as the Black Eagle from the 29th June, 1859, then had several name changes, including the Marquis of Queensbury (1891-1894), until 1894 when it was named the Aurora. It traded under that name until the 1st December, 1983 when it was demolished. The plan to demolish the building led to one of the most controversial heritage debates of the 1980s.

[General description] This modern three storey corner building exudes confidence. Its lines are plain but there are art deco touches in the leadlight detail in the top storey windows and the decorative parapet bearing the name of the company. It is only just completed as the windows are still whitewashed and shops on the ground floor have 'to let' signs in their windows. The firm was founded by Alfred George Healing in 1896, initially producing bicycles, but later diversified into manufacturing radios, television sets, refrigerators and washing machines. Two cars are seen on the road in the foreground, one a flat-bed utility. Headstone of Osmond Gilles, West Terrace Cemetery. Osmond Gilles was colonial treasurer and a pioneer in South Australia. He arrived onboard the "Buffalo" in 1836 with Governor John Hindmarsh. Although possessing a violent temper he also showed his compassionate side when he helped drag a handcart in the blazing sun from Holdfast Bay to Adelaide with Colonial Chaplain Rev. Charles Howard where they set up a makeshift shelter and held the first official service in Adelaide. He was a benefactor to various denominations and to many cultural societies and charitable institutions

H. M. S. "Buffalo"

The "Buffalo"(originally named the "Hindostan") was built of teak at Calcutta by Bonner and Horsburgh and launched on 4th January 1813. In October 1813 she was bought by the British Navy, renamed and classed as a sixth rater. She served as a convict ship in 1833 before her 1836 voyage to South Australia with Captain John Hindmarsh. She was an important ship in South Australian maritime history, serving many useful purposes before her eventual wrecking on the 28th July, 1840 in a storm at Mercury Bay, New Zealand. James Boucher, an early landholder at Hindmarsh Valley and Inman Valley. A researcher has added: 'this is pioneer SA pastoralist Richard Boucher James (1822-1908), of Canowie Station and Erudina Station fame'. The features and build are very similar to the pastoralist (see SLSA Image B8502/K1).

ALBUM: A collection of ten views depicting homes built by the South Australian pioneer families of Featherstone and Kearne which include the entrance, drive, and premises of 'Oaklands', built by John Wilson Kearne, and 'Brighton House', built by Michael Featherstone. John Ridley, the inventor of 'The Stripper' harvesting machine was a fellow emigrant, friend, and neighbouring settler; the album includes portraits of John and his wife Mary, a diagram and sketch of the original machine, and a view of the Ridley's first house at Hindmarsh, near Adelaide.
