'Senorita' steel barquentine
'Senorita' steel barquentine 324 tons [steel 3 mast schooner (insurance registered say brigantine) 350 gross, 324 net tons, ON112718, 144.2 x 27.15 x 11.25. Built 1893 Cumming and Ellis, Inverkeithing, for Norwegians who called her the same name. First registered British in 1900, to Auckland 1900 and sometime owned by the Northern Union Steam Boat Co. Ltd. Transferred to Sydney 1916 and owned by Sailing Ship Senorita Ltd. Register closed 1922 when vessel converted into a hulk]

Comprises a pocket edition of a religious tract 'Hints on self-examination' by the Rev. Hugh Stowell, published by the Religious Tract Society in 1840. Frances Amelia Skipper's name and the date '1842' have been written on the title page, and her husband JM Skipper has enhanced the booklet with an ink sketch of a woman (assumed to be Frances) looking in a mirror.


'Adele' steel steam yacht
'Adele' steel steam yacht, 288 tons.[steel, single screw steam yacht, 288 gross, 131 n tons, ON123022 145.0 x 22.4 x 13.2, built 1906 Hawthorn & Co, Leith, Triple expans. recip stm eng, 68nhp. Owners: Edgar Arthur Munday, reg. Pt. Adelaide c.1908 (or was Munday only an agent?) Henry Dutton. Purchased by RAN 1915 for a tender at Jervis Bay, and commissioned Sept. 14, 1915 as HMAS Franklin. Taken out of commission in 1921 she was transferred to New Guinea in 1924 as an official vessel. Laid up in 1932 she was sold and regained the name 'Adele' while in use as a private yacht. Her last registered owner was CP Relph. She was requisitioned by the RAN in Sept 1939 and made an examination vessel. While on duty at Port Kembla, NSW she was wrecked after colliding with the breakwater May 7, 1943. Also known as 'Franklin": HMAS and or owned by Australian Government and operating in New Guinea]

'Leprena' immediately after launching with her builders, March 1922 [wooden 2 mast ketch. ON131506. 70 gross, 67 net tons. 75.0 x 22.5 x 6.8. Built 1912 Philip B Forbes, Lake Macquarie, NSW and registered at Port Adelaide in 1923, having formerly been owned in Melbourne. Lengthened and renamed 'Leprena' in May 1938 = 105 gross, 85 net tons. 92.8 x 22.8 x 6.6. Requisitioned by Commonwealth Government during WW2 but returned to commerical service in 1946. Ultimately became a fishing vessel and was destroyed by fire off Port Moorowie, SA Feb. 12, 1964. 'Lufra' composite barque 705 tons [iron ship, altered to barque c.1875. 705 tons. ON62437. 179.7 x 31.7 x 17.9. Built 1870 (1) A Hall and Co. Aberdeen. Owners: William Anderson and Co. registered Banff; by 1875 AG Webster and Co., registered Hobart; c.1877 Alex. McGregor, registered Hobart, and later AE Risby of Hobart. About the turn of the century sold to Scandinavia and drops from the register c.1909. Lubbock claims the vessel was built as a China Clipper but was too late for the trade. She spent most of her life in the England-Australia trade, and when enrolled at Hobart was a regular trader to England]

'Lark' wooden schooner 139 tons aground at Port Adelaide, possibly following her collision with ss 'Darwin' at Semaphore Feb. 1890 [wooden 3 mast schooner, 179 gross, 139 net tons. ON93563. 108.0 x 22.4 x 10.6. Built 1881 Westacott and Sons, Barnstaple. First registered at Sydney in 1887. At Fremantle in 1897, at Port Adelaide in 1899 by Messrs. Seymour and in Nov. 1900. Owned by JJ Craig, the vessel was registered in Auckland. That register closed in 1909 with 'Broken up'.

(Girl's Friendly Society) congratulating Olive on her coming marriage, list of quiz questions relating to marriage and several Kodak and other print envelopes, one of them with a stamp for Gordon R. B. Parham Chemist, Streaky Bay.

The iron 4 masted barque 'Ellesmere', 2708 tons, in an unidentified harbour [iron 4 mast ship, 2708 gross tons. ON91920. 308.0 x 45.2 x 24.7. Built 1886 (4) Oswald, Mordaunt and Co. Southampton. Owners: Sailing Ship Ellesmere Co. Ltd. (Fisher and Sprott) registered London. Sold of German owners before 1900 and renamed Schiffbek and altered to 4 mast barque rig. Hurst (Last of the Square Riggers) p. 127 says the ship was taken over by the Portuguese in 1917 and her fate is unknown. He incorrectly states the ship was built at Whitehaven].

Owners: H Fernie and Sons, Liverpool (Liverpool Shipping Co.) registered Liverpool. Missing in 1905 on her passage from Bremerhaven to the Tyne. NB. There were two ships of this name in the fleet, the earlier one was built in 1881 and wrecked in 1884].

Built 1894 E Gundersen, Tvedstrand, Norway. Owners C. Wroldsen, registered Tvedstrand, 1907. Union Box and Packing Case Co. Ltd, registered Sydney later Sailing Ship 'Daniel' Ltd. converted to a hulk at Sydney c.1924. (Instead of a figurehead she had a lot of beautiful scroll work on her stem head and this has been preserved at the Snapper Island Training establishment in Sydney Harbour)].

Electronic images
The series consists of photographic records, newspaper clippings, correspondence and notes, relating to Ostoja-Kotkowski's work on creating and exhibiting electronic images. He was a pioneer artist in the production of electronic paintings. His first electronic image idea was in 1960 and the first experiments in designing images electronically was in collaboration with Dr G de V Gipps, Dr Angus Nicholson and PT Rudge. In 1964 the first electronic designing unit was built at the Philips Research Laboratories Hendon SA under HJ Brown, Dr Angus Nicholson and Mr Malcolm Kay. Images produced at Philips Laboratory were exhibited at the Argus Gallery, Melbourne in June 1964. An electronic images sequence produced with a ballet was shown on GTV-9 in September 1964 and Ostoja-Kotkowski used still projected electronic images in his Sound and Image production in the 1966 Adelaide Arts Festival.


Glass plate negatives and lantern slides; Family and children portraits
Records of the Reverend Arthur M. Trengove comprising lantern slides and glass plate negatives. The family hiking day series is most likely to be in the Flinders Ranges in proximity to the Alligator Gorge or Beetaloo Reservoir area. There are also images of the Trengove children, Miss Rosalie and Master Ronald at various stages of age. Trengove has carefully posed many of the images and has made an effort to create interesting scenes for his family subjects, which also include details in the background like landscapes or houses and fences. 'Marmion' wooden schooner 92 tons and 'Sir Henry' wooden brigantine 95 tons [Marmion = wooden 2 mast topsail schooner, 92 tons, ON66575, 75.3 x 23.1 x 9.0. Built 1874 John Darrach and Sons, Mahurangi. Owners were in Auckland, Wellington and finally Dunedin. Vessel went missing. Left Napier March 3, 1899 for Tairua, in ballast and not heard of since. Presumed to have foundered with all hands (6). Captain was Richard Wood] ['Sir Henry' = wooden 2 mast brigantine, 95 tons, ON93566, 90.1 x 23.8 x 6.7. Built 1887 Thomas Davis, Terrigal, NSW for owners in Sydney, in 1903 transferred to Auckland. Her last owners were Joseph Goomes and Albert Jagger, registered Auckland. The vessel capsized and was lost with all hands (4) near East Island, East Cape, North Island, New Zealand July 17, 1906 while in command of Joseph Goomes]

'Wenona' wooden barque 530 tons, 'Ranger' tug, 'Protector' tug ['Wenona' = wooden 3 mast barque, 529.73 gross tons 510.64 net tons. ON85374. 148.9 x 34.5 x 13.2. Built 1882 John E Bigelow, Canning, Kings County, Nova Scotia. Owners: 1882 WJ Stairs, Merchant. Halifax, Nova Scotia, registered Halifax 38/1882; May 1883 DH McKenzie and Partners, registered Auckland 6/1883; 1884 Donald Ross, major shareholder 40/64th; 1901 William Howard Smith and Sons Pty. Ltd., registered Melbourne 11/1901 and probably hulked. Register closed 1921 with 'Broken up', and most certainly was a hulk for much of her time on the Melbourne register]

'Muskoka' steel 4 masted barque 2357 tons [steel 4 mast barque, 2357 gross tons ON100269. 300.5 x 42.0 x 24.7. Built 1891 (11) Richardson, Duck and Co., Stockton. Owners: FC Mahon. Registered Windsor, Nova Scotia. In 1908 sold to Ant. Dom Bordes of Dunkirk and renamed 'Caroline'. Took fire and beached at Antofagasta in July 1920. Noted for fast passage in her early career]

Ltd. Registered London, later R Thomas and Co. Abandoned at sea 28 Oct. 1896 in the Atlantic when loaded with coal and bound from Swansea to Callao. Built for and well known in the New Zealand and Australian migrant trade. Said to have had accommodation equal to, if not better than most steamers of her time].

The iron ship 'Wellington', 1247 tons, in an unidentified port [iron ship, 1309 gross, 1247 net tons. ON71676, 239.9 x 36.0 x 20.8. Built 1874 (9) R Duncan and Co., Port Glasgow. Owners: Albion Shipping Co., registered Glasgow.1882 - Shaw, Savill and Albion Ltd.; 1906 sold to Norwegians without change of name. Abandoned in sinking condition Dec. 3, 1906 while under tow from Gulfport, USA towards Argentina. Constantly engaged in the UK-NZ emmigrant trade most of her life and was involved in some exciting incidents].

The iron ship 'Pleione', 1092 tons, in an unidentified harbour [iron 3 mast ship, 1139 gross, 1092 net tons. ON72369, 209.7 x 34.6 x 20.3. Built 1876 (9) A Stephen and Sons, Glasgow. Owners: Shaw, Savill and Co., registered Glasgow: 1882 - Shaw, Savill and Albion Ltd., registered Southampton. About 1899 sold to Norway without immediately changing her name but eventually became re-rigged as a barque and renamed 'Esov' and then 'Elvine Homuth' and finally 'Tamara XI'. Under this name she was wrecked in 1923 in the Gulf of Bothnia. Suffered a bad stranding in New Zealand in 1888 but was refloated and repaired] [Pleione = Greek mythology, daughter of Oceanus and mother of the Pleiades].

Built 1868 (2) A Stephens and Sons, Glasgow. Owners: John Norman junior, registered Maryport, then various others until 1899 when enrolled at Sydney by GJ Robertson and others. c.1905/6 G Sweet, registered Melbourne. c.1908/9 sold to Melbourne SS Co., and converted into a coal hulk that was employed in Albany and Fremantle in the 1920s. Eventually dismantled at Melbourne. Sometimes incorrectly called 'Maggie Moore' in her coal hulk days].
