Four men and a boy in the garden of Anlaby homestead near Kapunda, South Australia. The garden leads down to a flat open paddock with many gum trees. The older man sitting on the chair may be the explorer John McKinlay, who lived at Oaklands with his wife Jane Pile and her family. He died in December 1872.

Part of a collection of glass plate negatives which have been transferred from the National Trust of South Australia, Victor Harbor Branch. The images comprise portraits, mainly of women, and outings on the beach at Victor Harbor. The negatives were originally from Charles Hoffmann [assumed to be Hoffmann Photographics, Victor Harbor]. Austral Standard Orthichrome Plates.

The steel 4 masted barque 'Daylight', 3756 tons, in an unidentified harbour [steel 4 mast barque, 3756 tons. ON114812, 351.5 x 49.1 x 28.2. Built 1902 (1) Russell and Co. Port Glasgow. Owners Anglo American Oil Co. Ltd, registered London. c.1912 Standard Transportation Co. Ltd. registered Hong Kong. Made her last seagoing voyage in 1920-21 and then sold to Charles Nelson and Co. of San Francisco. Laid up until 1924 when she was converted to a barge. During WW2 with the shortage of tonnage she was re-rigged as a 6 mast schooner by Americans and renamed Tangara. Actual fate not known but apparently not a success under this last rig].

The iron ship 'Pleione', 1092 tons, in an unidentified port [iron 3 mast ship, 1139 gross, 1092 net tons. ON72369, 209.7 x 34.6 x 20.3. Built 1876 (9) A Stephen and Sons, Glasgow. Owners: Shaw, Savill and Co., registered Glasgow: 1882 - Shaw, Savill and Albion Ltd., registered Southampton. About 1899 sold to Norway without immediately changing her name but eventually became re-rigged as a barque and renamed 'Esov' and then 'Elvine Homuth' and finally 'Tamara XI'. Under this name she was wrecked in 1923 in the Gulf of Bothnia. Suffered a bad stranding in New Zealand in 1888 but was refloated and repaired] [Pleione = Greek mythology, daughter of Oceanus and mother of the Pleiades].

Built 1894 E Gundersen, Tvedstrand, Norway. Owners C. Wroldsen, registered Tvedstrand, 1907. Union Box and Packing Case Co. Ltd, registered Sydney later Sailing Ship 'Daniel' Ltd. converted to a hulk at Sydney c.1924. (Instead of a figurehead she had a lot of beautiful scroll work on her stem head and this has been preserved at the Snapper Island Training establishment in Sydney Harbour)].

'Kermandie' wooden schooner 343 tons [wooden aux. twin screw 4 mast schooner. 343 gross, 222 net tons. ON133495. 141.9 x 35.0 x 11.0. Built 1920 by CM McKay of Hobart (frequently reported to have been constructed on the Huon by McKay) eng. 70hp, later re-engined. Owners: Lune Timber and Trading Co. Ltd. Registered Hobart. Later Kermandie Shipping Co. Ltd. Kauri Timber Co. Ltd, registered Melbourne. Went aground on North Point Reef, 6 miles from Stanley ,Tasmania. On Sept. 6, 1952 and could not be refloated and she was sold to a scrap merchant who stripped her of everything valuable and demolished the wreck with explosives. Said to have been the last 4 masted sailing vessel in Australia when wrecked]

Converted to twin screw auxiliary sailing vessel Sept. 1926 = 233 gross, 53 net tons, engine 220bhp. Owners: Jagger and Partners, registered Auckland; 1910 FA Sargeant, timber merchant Sydney; 1917 William Archibald; 1919 Winstone Ltd; 1925 Gisborne Harbour Board; Wrecked at Hokitika Jan. 16, 1929 - some reports say at the time of her loss was owned by the Wellington-West Coast Shipping Co. Was originally the 'Skelmorlie, for details see under 'Cerro Alegre' and was renamed in 1915, her owners then being J Oelckers, of Chile]

Figurehead, 'Coriolanus' iron ship. [iron ship, 1074 tons, later barque rigged 1055 tons, ON73665. 217.4 x 35.2 x 20.1 Built 1876 (5) A. McMillan and Son, Dumbarton. Owners J. Patton Junior and Co. Registered London. c.1885. J. Stewart and Co. London. c.1891 to German owners and later Norwegian owners without change of name. In 1922 sold and renamed Tiburon and not long after became Eugenia Emilia in American ownership and registered in Panama, and under this name was caught rum running and sold to Portuguese owners by the authorities and c.1924 renamed Lina. Ultimately resold by Portuguese owners and reverted to her original name. Broken up c.1936. Driven ashore in the great gale of Sept. 1, 1902 at Port Elizabeth, Algoa Bay, South Africa (See Sydney Morning Herald 4/9/02)]

The steel ship 'Port Errol', 1935 tons, in an unidentified harbour [Note from Ron Parsons - 'This vessel not owned by Crawford and Rowat] [steel ship, 1935 tons, ON104594, 264.3 x 39.0 x 23.5. Built 1894 (11) Russsell and Co., Port Glasgow. Owners: CA Banck, registered Glasgow. Destroyed by fire in January 1895. While built for Crawford and Rowat never sailed for them as scuttled when took fire while loading for her maiden voyage. She was raised and repaired and became in succession the 'Svea' Swedish flag; 'Oregon' registered Bremen, 'Fritz Smith', Norwegian flag and finally 'Ekelund'].

In the period she took passengers to Auckland arriving Sept. 1878 and March 1882. To Wellington arriving July 1879, July 1880, April 1881, Jan. 1883. To Lyttelton arriving Oct. 1884. To Port Chalmers arriving Oct 1877, Nov. 1883. To New Plymouth arriving Dec. 1885. Reference 'White Wings' by Henry Brett 1924].

Family and personal photographs of George R. Harrison including three of his uncle, the bass-baritone singer Peter S. Dawson. Eleven photographs in the series were kept by G.R. Harrison in his personal pocket-book while serving with the 31st Battery, 8th Field Artillery Brigade and, with it, were returned to his family at Henley Beach following his death. Twenty four photographs have been copied from an album belonging to his mother Mrs V.F. Harrison. A selection of the photographs have been digitised.
