Photographs from Harry Godson's collection, some which had been assigned his catalogue numbers but were not included in earlier digitised series 1-4. A few have been donated since his death, to be added to his collection. Included are transparencies of aerial views of 1974 flood along River Murray, photographer unknown (Godson ref: 'Index 59'). Images 366-400 are the first in sequence, followed by images 322-352.

"Queen", river steamer was built at Goolwa in 1865, lengthened in 1872. "Queen" was a stern wheeler of 127 tons and used as a trading steamer that also carried passengers. She collided with "Jane Eliza" in 1876 and sank. She later towed "Bourke", and successively became a floating cold storage and butcher's shop based at Renmark. She finally burned and sank at Mypolonga. Notes on the back of the photograph say "According to a note supplied by Mr A Godson (donor of photograph) this vessel was equipped with portable engines, connected with the stern wheel by cogged gear. At a date unknown the main shaft broke and "Queen" was towed to Goolwa. Her engines were then put amidships and side paddles were installed. In her the Duke of Edinburgh was taken over Lake Alexandrina in 1867. At a later date she underwent extensive alterations and her old engines were replaced by Providences and iron top plates and broad guards were fitted." She had 16hp, 128gross,92 net tons, length 103 feet, beam 18 feet, draught 5 feet. She was built at Goolwa in 1865, she was lengthened in 1872.

Captains of River Steamers
Group portrait of Captains George Grundy, Edward Creamer, and F. H. C. Kruse, Masters of River Murray paddle steamers. Edward Creamer or Creemer, later standardised as Cremer, first came to Australia as a sailor on a ship carrying convicts to Tasmania in the 1820s. He worked on a number of whaling ships before joining a land-based crew at Encounter Bay by 1848. He lived at Goolwa, where he married Mary Driscoll in 1850 and had a large family. He was appointed as the first signalman at the Murray Mouth in 1857, but soon returned to working as a pilot, fisherman and captain of the schooner Water Lily, carrying cargo from ports around the lakes to Goolwa. Captain Edward Cremer was appointed the first signalman when the railway was established between Adelaide and Goolwa. He was found dead in his boat after suffering a heart attack while carrying a load of salt. He was 75 years old when he died in 1892 and had been a colonist for 50 years. Captain FHC Kruse was born 25th May, 1823 in Germany and went to sea at 14 years of age. He arrived in Adelaide in 1854, settled in Milang and purchased boats to begin trading on the lakes and Cooroong. Although retired at 80 he remained active in the Milang Regattas.

Currency Creek
Old mill, Currency Creek worked by Daniel Myrrick in 1863. According to local legend an illicit still was at one time operated in an underground chamber. The mill has alternatively been referred to as Myrick's Mill or Claughton's Mill. Daniel Myrick was seen at Currency Creek or Goolwa by 1855 whereas Daniel Merrett's family are said to have arrived in Goolwa in 1862. Both were involved in ship building. The mill later became a steam driven sawmill. Daniel Myrick has been listed as a carpenter as well as a ship builder. The mill produced flour from wheat in 1868 and that was loaded onto steamers on the nearby Lower Murray.

River steamers at Murray Bridge : The Victor, Length 93ft, Beam 14ft, Draft 5ft built at Goolwa 1877: The Venus, Length 110ft, Beam 19ft, Draft 6ft, built at Pt Adelaide 1867. The 'Tyro' is also pictured behind these two vessels. The PS Tyro was used for trading on the Murray River between 1872 and 1926. She was built by S Shetliffe and Sons at Goolwa. In 1897 she was almost destroyed by an exploding boiler.

Tolarno built at Goolwa in 1879, the Kelvin (formerly Ariel built in 1867) converted into the Kelvin at Goolwa in 1912., Ruby built at Morgan in 1907. The photograph shows a busy scene of river steamers moored at the wharf, train wagons and buildings.

Murray River steamer Albury : Built in Glasgow and brought in parts by sailing ship to Port Elliot, the boilers thrown overboard and floated ashore, then by tramway to Goolwa. The first steam trip in charge of Captain George Johnson to Albury on the River Murray. Captain George Johnson (1825-1889) married Elizabeth Barclay whose father was from Cockenzie in Scotland. After joining the gold rush to Forest Creek George built Cockenzie House in Little Scotland at Goolwa. He was appointed Captain of the Albury and when he had the first boat to reach Albury the townsfolk awarded him one hundred sovereigns which paid for a cup to commemorate the occasion. In the photograph The Albury and her sister ship the Gundagai can be seen on the River Murray. Two ladies can be seen on the roof of the cabin on the Albury. Many workers are standing on the two boats watching the cameraman.

The "Avoca" and the "Murrundi" (formerly the Menindie), at Goolwa. The Avoca was built at Milang in 1877 and was Australia's second oldest paddle boat. It was used for transporting grain from Goolwa to Port Adelaide and was 112 feet long. Captain D Treacy was the captain for some time.

Lieut.Col. T. W. Higgins
Lieut Col. Thomas Walker Higgins (1840-1899) (Goolwa Volunteer Cavalry). He is wearing a Gambaldi jacket. In 1861 he became a volunteer in the Goolwa and Port Elliot Rifle Brigade. Before this he was a clerk at the Adelaide Post Office. He bought land at Currency Creek and named the property Higginsbrook after the family home in Ireland. He had cattle, sheep and cereal crops. He was respected by the local Aboriginals. He became Lieut. Colonel in 1867 and was given the rank of Colonel in Charge of the Voluntary Cavalry. He is buried in the Currency Creek Cemetery.

George Bain Johnston
Captain George Bain Johnston was born in Scotland and sailed out to Melbourne in 1853. Later he joined the gold rush at Forest Creek. He moved to Goolwa and in 1857 purchased land in Little Scotland, Goolwa. He built Cockenzie House. He was regarded as one of the Murray's most successful navigators, a loyal, intelligent and enterprising colonist.
