Five South Australian Pioneers who have seen each of the seventy birthdays of the State. Taken at the banquet given by the Mayor of Glenelg (Mr H.W. Varley) on Commemoration Day (Proclamation Day) in December 1906, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the State.

Bickford's Saddlery, 20 Hindley Street

Bickford's Saddlery was established by Humphrey Harding Bickford following his arrival in South Australia aboard the 'Gratitude' on the 15th August 1848,(see Register 16.8.1848). Humphrey (39) was killed in a riding accident near the Cross Keys on the 30 October 1864, (see Register 31 October 1864). After this his wife Sarah ran the saddlery until 1879. Sarah (74) died at Glenelg on the 7th April 1901, (see Register 8 April 1901). Both were buried in West Terrace Cemetery. For another view, see B 21602.

King William Street, west side. The left side of Lorraine's premises is on the southern boundary of Acre 202. FJ Lorraine was a working jeweller, watch and clock maker and was an engraver. There were also premises at Jetty Road Glenelg.

[General description] Transport of the past and the future is represented in front of the new premises of Motors Limited, dealers in Rolls Royce, Hudson and Essex cars. Parked at the kerbsides are a horse and cart, a bicycle and a shiny Rolls Royce (registered to Mrs. K. Tennant of Glenelg in July 1925, registration number 47172). [On back of photograph] 'Acre 609 / Gilbert Street, north side / May 26, 1927 / The near portion of Motors Ltd. (taking in six windows) was erected in 1926 on a vacant allotment. / Site of new portion: Near side is 31 yards east of Norman Street . Frontage is 35 yards.' (Another hand) 'Compare with B 13207.'

Adelaide Battery of Artillery

Adelaide Battery of Artillery, taken on the old Parade Ground, on the site of the South Australiam Museum. The building on the right is the old Ordnance Store, and that on the left the Police Barracks. Colonel L.B. Matthews (on horse) commanded the Battery. The officers from L -R are Lieut J.L.R. Fiveash, Capt. W.D. Claxton, and Lieut. B. Solomon. The battery wore the imposing blue Garibaldi jackets with scarlet facing and stripes. The guns are six-pounders. The Battery practised at Glenelg and fired from the south side of the jetty into the sea at a target placed on Oyster Point. Other members of the Battery included Sgt. C. Wells, Sgt. Charles White of Fulham, Cpl. Thomas Barnett, Gunner Frederick W. Botting of the Lands Office is the tall figure on the extreme right of the picture, Gunner Daniel Lawrence and Gunner J. N. Perry.

South Terrace Railway Station near Peacock Road. May 4, 1929. Taken a few weeks after the running of the last train to Glenelg on this line. It was demolished in 1929. Near side is 93 1/2 yards south of South Terrace. Frontage 44 1/2 yards. The station building is long and single storey and is flanked by a picket fence.

H.M.S. Nelson

H.M.S. Nelson at Sydney. James Elphinstone Erskine was its Commander. HMS Nelson visited South Australia during the 1880s. She was the flagship of the British Naval Force based at Sydney. Before Federation in 1901 five of the six separate colonies maintained their own naval forces for defence. The colonial navies were supported by the ships of the Royal Navy's Australian Station which was established in 1859. In 1901 the Commonwealth Naval Forces was created
