Gill, Samuel Thomas, 1845, Artwork, B 7170
Coloured lithograph published in 'The Chronicle Annual', Monday 4th October 1937, one of two coloured reproductions of early paintings (see B 7169 for the other artwork) under the heading 'Early South Australia'. The caption for this artwork reads: 'North Terrace, Adelaide, in 1845, from a sketch by S.T. Gill. This was the beginning of the handsome boulevard which is North Terrace today. It makes an interesting comparison with the picture of North Terrace in 1937. North Terrace of the forties is seen to comprise a number of thatched or shingled cottages, while on the left is the guardhouse of Government House, with a sentry on duty. Men of the British Regiment then stationed in Adelaide are in the foreground.' [The original is attributed to the National Gallery, Adelaide.]
