Adelaide Festival of Arts projects

The series consists of photographs, negatives, transparencies and documents relating to proposals, and projects undertaken by Ostoja-Kotkowski, for the Adelaide Festival of Arts. They include sound and image productions, floats, chromasonic towers, festival decorations, and exhibitions. It includes 'Genesis' designed in 1962 which was Ostoja's first attempt to present photographic images synchronised with sound. The 1968 Sound and Image production used a laser beam for the first time. 'Time Riders' was produced for the 1970 festival. Ostoja combined dreamtime legends with poetry by Judith Wright, Roland Robinson, Kenneth Slessor and Max Harris. The script was by Tony Morphett and the music by Richard Meale, Peter Sculthorpe and John Antill. 1964 float for the parade; Sound and Image production. 1966 street decorations; exhibition of photography by Members of Image 8; Sound and Image production. 1968 Sound and Image production. 1970 Chromasonic tower; Sound and Image production of Time Riders; street decorations;. 1980 Laser kinetic exhibition 'Futuresight'. 1982 Laser concert. 1990 'Brush with stage' participant in exhibition. 1994 'Inscape 94' exhibition.

Triple expansion recip. steam engines, 134nhp by shipbuilder. Owners: Built for the Adelaide Steam Tug Co. but taken over by the Royal Navy when completed. Sold out of service. Jan. 1922. The Adelaide Steam Tug Co. Ltd., registered Port Adelaide. Two funnels. Most powerful tug in South Australia until the arrival of mv 'Tusker'. Sold 1964 to KW Tidwell, Port Lincoln, for conversion to a tuna fishing boat. She was not converted and the hull was broken up in Port Adelaide during 1965. See 'Steam Tugs in SA' by Parsons]

Built 1912 Philip B Forbes, Lake Macquarie, NSW and registered at Port Adelaide in 1923, having formerly been owned in Melbourne. Lengthened and renamed 'Leprena' in May 1938 = 105 gross, 85 net tons. 92.8 x 22.8 x 6.6. Requisitioned by Commonwealth Government during WW2 but returned to commerical service in 1946. Ultimately became a fishing vessel and was destroyed by fire off Port Moorowie, SA Feb. 12, 1964. 'Cheopis'. [Cheopis means flea. Steel single screw steamship, ON156011, 55 gross, 25 net tons. 70.0 x 14.0 x 5.3. Built 1914 Robinson Bros. Melbourne. Compound steam engine, 34nhp, by shipbuilder, 10 knots. Owners South Australian Government's Customs and Health Department (Built as a boarding launch) Taken out of service and towed to Melbourne by SS Lady Loch Oct. 21, 1932. Sold and in 1934 registered at Port Adelaide by Kangaroo Island Transport Co. Ltd and intended for a service between Cape Jervis and Kangaroo Island. This was not successful and she was eventually sold and converted into a shark fishing boat no later than 1946. Eventually she became the property of Mr J. Anderson, of Apollo Bay, Vic. who unofficially renamed her Black Witch. She was wrecked Jan. 22 1954 at Apollo Bay. Her register was closed at Port Adelaide Customs in June 1956 with 'Vessel sunk'.]

Built 1871 Hansen, Skien. Owners: J Nielsen, registered Porsgrund] [wooden barque. 1047 tons. ON29463. 191.5 x 34.8 x 22.0. Built 1862 (9) A Stephen and Sons. Dundee. Owners A Stephen and Sons, registered Dundee. c.1882 sold to Bremen and renamed Meta Seeger. Noted as being stranded in 1887]. According to a researcher the captain of this ship was Richard H Cary - who came from the fishing village of Mousehole in Cornwall England. He was one of five brothers - all were ships captains who spent time in Australian waters. Richard was the only one of the brothers who did not die at sea.

Also in the group is a collection of 8 passenger lists of ships with names of Company emigrants who arrived in the colony between 1837 and 1839 (records formerly accessioned as V 1174).

The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.

Chapman and Charles Anderson, all of Kingscote), an ink sketch by Sir Tom Bridges of S.A. White and Bill Chapman titled 'The Guides disagree', and photographs taken by S.A. White during the trip around Kangaroo Island. The envelope containing the prints carries a note which reads 'K.I. Trip with Sir Tom Bridges - round the Island by [Dort] car'.
