Summary

The wooden ketch 'Surprise', 38 tons, in an unidentified harbour [wooden 2 mast ketch, ON57621, 38 tons, 63.0 x 17.7 x 6.1. Built 1889 Thomas Purdon, Old Beach, Hobart, Tasmania. Owners: T Purdon, registered Hobart. May 1910 George R Heritage, registered Port Adelaide. Transferred to Melbourne December 1924 and fitted with an auxiliary motor. Subsequently became a fishing boat based on Port Welshpool. See 'Ketches of South Australia' 3rd edition, 1978]

From the volume titled 'South Australian Owned Coasters, Part I'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
