The main Fire Station (on the right) has a row of four doors at ground floor level with appliances at the ready. B 15929 shows other buildings associated with the Fire Brigade. The Fire Brigade Headquarters was replaced by a new building, opened on this site in 1982. A fire at John Martins on Charles Street on Easter Saturday 1901 at 1100am. The fire started in a window display where a gas light cracked and lit nearby muslin material. The steam fire engine arrived within five minutes and the shoppers were evacuated. By noon there were 10,000 people in Rundle Street and North Terrace.

[General description] This two storey stone building has been gutted by a fire which occurred at about 3 a.m. on Monday, 2nd January 1928. Damage was estimated to be more than £20.000. The building was occupied chiefly by WIlcox, Mofflin. Ltd., hide, skin and wool merchants, and S. C. Eyles and Co., wholesale grocers and Importers. The Richards Building next door was also badly damaged in a big fire three years earlier on Tuesday 11th November, 1924. [On back of photograph] 'The two storey buildings were demolished in 1928. For view of buildings subsequently erected see B 5071' (Another hand) 'Acres 135 & 136 / Currie St., south side / west corner of Bloor Court / 10 January 1928 / Photo. taken shortly after the fire'.

A photographer photographing a scene in Wakefield Street, Adelaide, during the Duke of Cornwall and York's visit. The Chronicle newspaper of 13 July 1901, page 16, reported "The Metropolitan Fire Brigade had constructed a fireman's arch across Wakefield Street in front of the head station. Two fire escapes, with ladders extended to full length, towered to the height of 60 ft., and afforded a splendid opportunity for a display of bunting. Two steamers, with their brass work well burnished, enhanced the imposing character of the display. From the ladders was flying a naval welcome to the Duke of Cornwall. ..." The Fire Station is on the right. The extreme right of the photo is 18 yards west of Roper Street, and the left side of Simpson's is about 70 yards west of Hanson Street.

Wakefield Street, south side, Metropolitan Fire Brigade station, right side of station is 33 1/3 yards east of Divett Place and frontage is 33 1/3 yards. This beautifully appointed two storey red brick building has two bay windows with shutters on the first storey. Between these are tall entrances to house the fire cars and carts. A tall extended ladder stands in the background of the photograph which depicts the Fire Brigade's appliances in approximately 1911.

Fireman Lewis William Robertson, Head Fire Station, Kadina in his fire brigade band uniform. He was born 16 July 1867, and died 28 September 1960. He was Officer in charge of Kadina Fire Station from 1911 to 1925.

The photograph includes the names of members of the 18th Battery, including Collin Twist. This shot was the first fired by any South Australian battery on active service in the region.
