A researcher has provided the following information: Going by the direction the mule team is facing, they have crossed Cooper Creek already, and are facing the direction to transport the wool (probably Cordillo Wool clip) south to the railhead at Marree, or Farina.

Parachilna name comes from the Nukunu Aboriginal word meaning place of peppermint gum trees. The railway lines and station can be seen in this photograph. When the railway line from Port Augusta to Farina passed through the area in 1881 the whole town was moved 10 kilometres so the population could be closer to the railway siding. The new town was laid out in 1890. The original town was surveyed in 1863

Aboriginal boy Billy Kite was found at Muccumba Station and adopted by Stephen and Matilda Kite from Farina, who sent him to Port Augusta to be educated. He became the best stockman in the far north-west. His twin sister Naraldia married a Mr Warren from Finniss Spring near Maree. [From information provided.]

Camel Mail Buggy

Camel Mail Buggy

Camel drawn mail buggy used on the Cordillo Downs run. Cordillo Downs, originally Cardilla is 72 miles north of Innamincka and 96 miles south west of Birdsville in South Australia. The area was once Australian's largest sheep station. Airmail delivery to remote outback properties began in 1949 but before this the camel drawn mail buggy was used. The Afghans with their camel teams hauled stores and mail up the Strzelecki Track to Farina and returned with wool. The journey took two months to complete. Cordillo Downs had it's own post office in 1900.

[On back of photograph] 'Locomotive no. 53 / Class W (Maker's continuation no. 1717 / Built in Manchester in 1877 by Beyer Peacock / Used on construction work by Barry, Brooks & Fraser until 1882, when it was sold to the South Australian Railways. Sold to Teasdale Smith in December 1911 / Used on 3'6" guage / Photo evidently between 1882 and 1911 / Information supplied by Mr. L.S. Kingsborough'.

An abandoned Cobb & Co coach at Accallana Well. A note with the photo reads 'dumped used to be dragged by camels across Cobbler Desert'. However Benny Kerwin, a "half caste" Yandruwandha man from Innamincka, drove the Farina to Innamincka Cobb & Co. mail coach as a teenager. In approximately 1906-1907 he was crossing Accalana crossing, Strzelecki creek and the horses bolted, causing the mail coach to crash. For sometime after that he carried the mail by packhorse.

Envelope and six photographs showing Coopers Creek in flood near Innamincka, and camel team hitched to a mail coach at Carraweena en route for Innamincka. Envelope is addressed to 'The Honorable Judge Mitchell Adelaide, from Baron De Pury, Police Station Innamincka, S. A'. Each photograph is captioned, signed 'J. R. de Pury, M. C.' [mounted Constable] and dated '22/5/26'. Other copies of the photograph 'Changing mails at Carraweena' are held at B 44611, B 68243/45, B 25220 and PRG 1435/1/24 but B 72715 has the definitive date.

Also included are photographs thought to be of the Warren family at 'Springfield' and taken during various family outings, and photographs of John Warren comprising: a photograph of John Warren and two other men dressed in military uniform, a group portrait of the Royal Pastoral Commission, an unidentified group portrait (possibly the Legislative Council), and a composite photograph of the 1902 Legislative Council.

Witchelina Station, home of Ragless Brothers. Richard W. Ragless is on the balcony and Henry Ragless is on the steps. The house was buily by John Ragless Junior and his sons, near Farina. It was destroyed by fire on 1 December 1959, and was owned at the time by Myrtle Springs Pastoral Company. Cap and valve came out of petrol pump. Took part of brother's car." Possibly Reverend Griffiths, near Alice Springs.
