[General description] The Government Survey Camp, Palmerston is an orderly collection of tents and iron huts in a cleared area in the sparse bush. The sea is visible in the distance. (From Captain Sweet's negative).

Palmerston. Warden's office. This wooden slatted building has a galvanised iron roof and is raised off the ground on piles. Deckchairs are positioned on the verandah and a large water tank can be seen in front of the office.

Palmerston. Government Boatman's hut on left, Mr. Packard's quarters in centre. These buildings were near the mud house built by prison labour under supervision of J.G. Knight.

Palmerston. Medical officer's quarters, and Senior Surveyor's quarters. One of the buildings is well made using wooden slats, logs and a galvanised roof while the other building looks a little worse for wear. It is constructed from galvanised sheets but the roof has pieces of loose bark laid over the tin. Both buildings have been built on a slope and have partial piles to keep them level.

Palmerston. New road and causeway, Fort Hill on right, Government Schooner "Flying Cloud" in harbour. The new road has been constructed at sea level among the mangroves at the bottom of a cliff.

Palmerston. Land and Survey Offices - later used as Police Station. This smart white wooden slatted building has a shingled roof and decorative carved freize along the eaves. There are six windows with ventilation slats above each along the sides of the building.

Palmerston. Secretary's and Accountants' quarters are on the left. Trooper Millars quarters are on the right. These buildings stood in a camp on the way to Gulnare Jetty. See also B 9755.

Palmerston. Camp between Fort Hill and main shore. George Goyder established a new settlement called Palmerston in 1869. His camp was situated at Fort Hill. The camp was built just above the high tide mark and the photograph shows a collection of rustic buildings with an expanse of small rocks in the foreground.

Palmerston. Government House, and camp. Captain William Bloomfield Douglas chose the site for his Government Residence in 1870. It was tropical design with ten main rooms surrounded by a verandah. This photograph shows the residence at the top of the hill and the rest of the camp builldings near sea level below.

Palmerston. Fort Point and a fishing boat dragged up to the high tide mark. Fishing nets can be seen rolled up in the boat. A two masted boat is anchored in the bay. People are walking along the causeway around the bottom of the cliffs.

Palmerston. Curator of Botanic Gardens (Dr. Holtze) residence. This is about two miles from Palmerston. Dr Maurice Holtze was appointed Government Gardener in 1878 and successfully established the gardens and experimental nursery at the original site of the Botanic Gardens near Fannie Bay Gaol. Nicholas Holtze took over from his father in 1892 when Maurice became curator of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

Overland Telegraph construction camp and stables.

Palmerston Saw Mill and residence in Bennett Street. The saw mill was built just before 1878 for Herbert Manders. He established a steam driven saw mill and timber yard on the corner of Smith Street and Bennett Street. The local cypress pine which was resistant to white ants was cut there for building purposes.

Mr. Solomon's house. The Hon. Vaiben Louis Solomon was the Premier of South Australia abd represented the Northern Territory in the South Australian House of Assembly.

Government Residence perched on small cliffs above the Timor Sea. The building is of mid-Victorian Gothic style adapted for the harsh conditions by the addition of shaded verandahs and porches.

Police Inspector's Residence about 1880. Inspector Paul Foelsche and troopers arrived to establish the first proper constabularary in 1870. The stone residence has a wide verandah around two sides of the large building.
