Baldwin Spencer of Melbourne University, July 1911. He was then Special Commissioner and Chief Protector of Aborigines in the Northern Territory. Each photograph has note 'Photo by Professor W. Baldwin Spencer of Melbourne University July 1911'.

[General description] The Port Darwin jetty curves across the centre of this view of sea and sky where a large four masted barque, the 'Euphrates' is moored. This ship was carrying railway iron when it ran aground near Darwin. There is a smaller three masted square rigged vessel behind her. Palmerston Club Hotel, Darwin. In 1939 the Hotel Darwin took over the goodwill, license and freehold of the Club Hotel in Darwin. It was built on the site of the old Club Hotel.

This view shows one end of the Residency building with its twin gables and louvred verandah. A flagstaff stands in the middle of the lawn which is surrounded by flower beds. [General description] Boys wearing sailor suits and girls in their best frocks and hats are standing in a circle around the lawn next to the Residency building, a stone house with twin gables and a louvred verandah. Cables supporting the flagstaff can be seen. See B 24187/6 for a more comprehensive view of the Residency. Government Residency, Port Darwin. This two storey timber residence has wide verandahs to shade from the hot northern heat. Palm trees are growing in the grounds.

St. Marys Star of the Sea Catholic Church, (Darwin) Palmerston - blown down in cyclone of 1897, rebuilt later by Rev. Morrison. The destroyed church can be seen at B 29855. The roof of this original church was constructed from iron and rose in a sharp peak with wide verandahs all around. A bell has been erected on poles in the grounds to the right of the church. It is interesting to note that a similar bell tower has been erected on the new St Marys Star of the Sea Catholic Church. This bell is also at the right of the church

[General description] This is probably the Fort Hill Public Baths, built around eighteen eighty and in use until nineteen nineteen when swept away by a cyclone. The walls of the baths are constructed from timber logs with gaps between them so the water can flow through but to keep out sharks, crocodiles etc. A man is standing on top of the railings to show their height. [General description] A group of men, women and children have assembled for the installation of the first pole of the Overland Telegraph on the 15th September, 1870. One of the men is standing on a ladder propped against the pole. [General description] This view looks out over the bay to the hill where the government buildings are situated. The area is covered with light bush with buildings in cleared areas, the largest possibly warehouses. Various small craft are anchored in the bay. [On back of photograph] 'Government House and Government Offices, Darwin, looking from Fort Hill / Government House stands on the high ground on the left. The Government Offices are on the high ground to the right. The elaborate building not far from the water's edge was built as a residence by J.C. Knight with prison labour. [General description] Scrub covered Stokes Hill provides a backdrop for this view of the railway yard which comprises a complex of buildings, one on the extreme right being under construction. The S.S. "Brisbane" and Schooner "Seagull" at Port Darwin. Photograph taken on the west side of Fort Hill. Banana palms are growing among the lush vegation at the port. Smaller boats are carrying goods and people to vessels moored off the coast in deeper water. Photographer was possibly Paul Foelsche.

The jetty makes a curved sweep out to its end where there are three ships berthed. Two other ships are seen further out at sea. Ships from left to right are 1: S.S. 'Tsinan', China Navigation Company, 1459 tons reg. from Sydney; 2: Ship 'Falkland Hill' from Hamburg, 1429 tons reg. with cement for Messrs. C & E Millar; 3: S.S. 'Menmuir', Eastern and Australian Company, 1247 tons reg. from Sydney; 4: S.S. 'Catterthun', Eastern and Australian Company, 1406 tons reg. from Sydney; 5: S.S. 'Chingtu' China Navigation Company, 1459 tons reg. from Hong Kong. *The Eastern and Australian Company's hulk 'Belle of South Esk', 540 tons reg. is receiving cargo between Nos. 3 and 4. [On back of photograph] 'The old railway jetty, Port Darwin / In the nineties (before August 8th 1895, the date of the wreck of the 'Catterthun') / Rebuilt 1900-1903 after it had been 'practically toppled into the sea' as a result of attacks of a marine borer (Teredo navalis)'.
