Yatala Labour Prison, The first prison building at Yatala. In use in the 1850's. Situated in a gully to the Nth. East of the Prisons erected subsequently. Overlooked by the barracks occupied for a time by a guard of Imperial Troops. Prison demolished many years before 1936. the photograph shows a derelict single storey brick building with six windows either side of two doorways.

James John Hall

Sergeant Major James John Hall, Mounted Police, born 5 May 1821. He joined the Metropolitan Police 21 February 1842. He became a Lance Corporal 1 January 1847, Corporal 10 October 1847. He became a Sergeant 1 March 1852 and Sergeant Major 8 February 1853. He was made Inspector 12 June 1861 and finally left the Service 30 June 1861. At one stage he was living at the old Police Barracks on North Terrace, and whilst there a son was born to him; a volley of guns was fired to mark the occasion. This ambrotype photograph shows James John Hall in his ceremonial uniform holding a sword.

Parade of Junior Constables. In 1934 a Junior Constable training course was introduced in South Australia. In the photograph several of the constables are playing the bugle. The Police Band was a part-time unit which at this time consisted of mainly Junior Constables. It was housed at Thebarton Police Barracks. Other constables were housed at the Port Adelaide Police Depot in primitive buildings with poor amenities and bad hygiene.

Trinity Church, North Terrace was the first Anglican Church built in South Australia and is one of the oldest buildings in the City of Adelaide. The foundation stone was laid by Governor Hindmarsh in 1838. The clock in the tower was made by Vulliamy, the clockmaker to King William IV and was intended to be used as the first town clock. By the time of this photograph the galleries in the transepts were added. Garrison troops led by their own brass band marched down North Terrace from their barracks to attend services.

This building was originally built for pastoralist John Rounsevell from materials from Mitcham and Glen Osmond quarries. The building is much altered due to the removal of the elaborate perimeter verandah/balcony and the addition of the crudely detailed porch

In the fore ground to the left is Government House, looking left is the Institute building of the State Library of South Australia, the South Australian Museum and Adelaide University. The Army Barracks on the Parade Ground are just out of the photograph. Kintore Avenue seems to peter out near the Teachers College buildings. There is an empty block next to the Adelaide Club on North Terrace.

Crucial factors are the existence of the Adelaide Club (finished 1865 or 1866) and the absence of the stables erected for the Duke of Edinburgh in 1867. Interesting to note the wide open spaces between the sparsely placed buildings.

Adelaide Battery of Artillery, taken on the old Parade Ground, on the site of the South Australiam Museum. The building on the right is the old Ordnance Store, and that on the left the Police Barracks. Colonel L.B. Matthews (on horse) commanded the Battery. The officers from L -R are Lieut J.L.R. Fiveash, Capt. W.D. Claxton, and Lieut. B. Solomon. The battery wore the imposing blue Garibaldi jackets with scarlet facing and stripes. The guns are six-pounders. The Battery practised at Glenelg and fired from the south side of the jetty into the sea at a target placed on Oyster Point. Other members of the Battery included Sgt. C. Wells, Sgt. Charles White of Fulham, Cpl. Thomas Barnett, Gunner Frederick W. Botting of the Lands Office is the tall figure on the extreme right of the picture, Gunner Daniel Lawrence and Gunner J. N. Perry.

The ramshackle building on the right was the Commissionariat and Officers' quarters. (Room 29 on plan). In the centre (Room 28) was the hospital. [General description] This stone building, with its Dutch gables and slate roof, was originally part of the Police Barracks and was granted to the Destitute Board in April 1851. Weeds growing in the gravel drive in front of the building give a desolate feel to the image.
