Summary

[On back of photograph] 'S.A. Institute / Between 1860 and 1863 / Government called for erection of a fence in front of the Institute June 1863.' [General description] The South Australian Institute building was opened on January 29th 1861 and housed a developing range of cultural collections and services, beginning with a trunk of books brought out by Robert Gouger. Part of the Mounted Police Barracks can be seen on the right.
