Plaque commemorating General Douglas McArthur's visit
Plaque commemorating General Douglas McArthur's visit on 20 March 1942, Terowie Railway Station, when he changed trains on his way to Adelaide, and made a speech regarding the Battle of the Philippines. Written on the plaque: '"I came out of Bataan and I shall return" This historic message that echoed around the world was given on this spot by U.S. General Douglas McArthur at his first press interview in Australia 20.3.1942'.

The Terowie Institute. Terowie was founded as a private venture by John A Mitchell who built a public house on the main road near the Inkermann Mine. By 1875 there were seven houses in a row. By 1880 there were 2 stores, 2 butchers, bakery, saddlery, bootmaker, 3 blacksmiths, hotel, 2 chapels, Institute, and a railway station.

This photograph shows the main street lined with businesses and a lone car parked at the kerb. John A Mitchell donated the land on which the Institute was built.
