Royal Hotel, Terowie

Royal Hotel, Terowie

[General description] Passengers are piled high on the Broken Hill coach which is drawn by a four horse team and watched by a small crowd of men and boys who have gathered to see it off. The Royal Hotel is a two storey stone building with a decorative iron lace balcony along its front. J.T. Winterbottom was the licensee at the time. [On back of photograph] 'Royal Hotel / Terowie, showing the coach about to leave for Broken Hill during the boom / 1884 / Copy of photo in possession of the Terowie Institute / Presented by Mr. H.O. Sexton'. John Wilson, author of the book 'Bob's Railway' has provided the following information: 'I had, some months ago visited Terowie and as there was only one two-storey hotel structure resembling the Royal Hotel, I assumed that it had changed its name to the Imperial Hotel, and made that comment in the caption of the book. A reader has drawn to my attention that the Royal Hotel and the Imperial Hotel were both built about the same time and were very similar in appearance. The Royal Hotel burned down in 1934.'
